What does the System show it as being?

Looks like the seller I got it from (or someone else) put together a T500 and W500: bottom appears to be T500 but the top is W500 (as shown) and screen also (WUXGA).

Has 2X 2GB.

So it's some sort of frankenpad. That could be the cause of the issue.

T500s and W500s took the same chassis. That could explain the differences. Does the mobo have two or four memory slots? Again, that is not a final determinant because about half of the W500s had only dual core CPUs and thus only 2 mem slots. The only way to tell what the board is (boards are) is to look up the FRU(s) in the HMM. MTM 2055-3AU is a T500.

The GPU and vRAM are the only differences between the T500 and W500 planars.

unixed is correct. Resultantly, all W500 are dual core units with 2 memory slots. AFAIK no Core 2 Duo ThinkPad had more than 2 memory slots, ever.

That's good to know I thought that some W500s had quad core CPUs, but if not, then the only difference is the Graphics GPU, a la the T61 / T61p. By the time the W520 / W530 came out there were dual and quad core versions of them.
