WTB 9cell battery for T420/T430

#1 Post by Bionicman » Fri Jul 03, 2020 6:05 pm

I really hope I can find a genuine Panasonic-made battery (or LGC), as the Sanyo ones tend to lose charge quickly.
I need batteries with the most possible Wh left. If someone here has a redundant battery I will be happy to lift it off from him/her.
I prefer EU only.

Thanks

Do note that without the BIOS mod on the T430, a battery for a T420 may not work for a T430.
The other way around works just fine.

That's not a BIOS-mod, it is an EC-mod!

Thanks for the reminder. Fortunately, I need it for a T420. But having a 70++ battery may be useful if I decide to switch to T430 later (probably the most hours-on-batteries useful machines). But I noticed the slice Sanyo battery is losing charge quickly. On another Thinkpad its Sanyo 9cell battery did the same.

Good luck man I've only had Sanyo's. Never once got an LGC or a Panasonic.

Mine 9cell currently is LGC. It was holding up nice with 323 cycles up to now, but after a deep discharge it suddenly dropped from 65 to 55Wh.

How can you tell the manufacturer of the cell though? I have a spare 42T4801 and I was never a fan of bulky batteries. Willing to throw it for cheap but I'm in US :/

Behold the power of Linux! :) This is my T520
sudo tlp-stat -b
...
/sys/devices/platform/smapi/BAT0/manufacturer = LGC
/sys/devices/platform/smapi/BAT0/model = 42T4969
...

Has the kind sir yet seen my - or anybody else's - ravings about KingSener batts on AliExpress? £25-30 delivered, take a month to arrive. Haven't seen issues yet with an X230 batt on my X220 since end of Jan - but not using it much either due to the power of the Virus :( Be sure to make the right choice between 6-cell and 9-cell, I ordered one batt correctly and got it wrong for one other batt. The listing was showing the options as milli-amper-hours rather than as watt-hours and I clicked the wrong choice.

They have the name physically printed on the 55/70 series batteries, but not sure about the others. On the 55+/55++ batteries it says the manufacturer name near the barcode. For instance, SANYO Electric Co., Ltd. On the 70+/70++ it says Sanyo Energy (Suzhou) Co, Ltd. The battery has a lot of other languages like Chinese, Japanese, and Korean that is pretty prominent. Then the danger warning is in all sorts of languages.

I also use Lenovo Power Manager in Windows 7, so it tells you the manufacturer. Although the caveat is that if you buy aftermarket ones like Anker it will still say Sanyo and I don't know if it's recycled Sanyo cells or not.

Thanks for the info. Of those I didn't know - if nothing else shows up, I will give them a shot. I wouldn't bother with a 6cell if 9 is an option. Have you made any deep discharges below 25-30% ? Usually that's when aftermarket batteries show thьt their actual capacity is 20% less than claimed.

Yours seem to be some kind of legit refurbished battery - probably not the best kind of cells inside, but still, even from USA, it may be worth it. I will send you PM, thanks for the offer.

Yes, I did run my X220 until it switched off a few times with it. Think my experience was all right. It lasted up to 4 hours watching youtube via WiFi under Ubuntu with a 6-cell KingSener; probably a bit better than with my somewhat worn genuine 6-cell. I believe I'd seen the documented erratic battery behaviour once when capacity suddenly tanked around 25-30% mark. But crucially and ironically I had first seen it on the genuine batt. Actually this was exactly what pushed me into buying KingSener. And then I saw it on KingSener too. Then I read again that bit of docs for TLP and had the sad a-ha moment. Then I removed

Code: Select all

STOP_CHARGE_THRESH_BAT0=80
from TLP conf and that fixed the issue I think.
