WTS: highly-specced ThinkPad T520 for parts (i7-2860QM, 1080p LCD)

#1 Post by kfzhu1229 » Fri Jul 03, 2020 11:33 pm

For sale is a pair of T520's for parts (one complete but both motherboards have issues).
This was meant for a restoration project and sell it to someone I know of that needs it, but EVERYTHING about the restoration went horribly, horribly wrong. This is by far the worst restoration attempt that I have dealt with.
It started with the keyboard broken, so I went some 120KM to get a cheap deal on a parted out T520 hopefully to use the keyboard, but that also turned out to be broken. Seeing that also has NVS4200M like mine but had battery charging issue, I was attempting to fix that motherboard hoping I would at least gain something from that 120KM trip, only to break my working one when my multimeter tip slipped when comparing the voltages and I know now both have broken BQ24742 IC chips. Trying to replace one of them today, and I broke the top two MOSFETs when taking out the chip. Those have a death grip on them under my heat gun and I moved a bunch of IC's behind the motherboard when trying to remove those MOSFETs, rendering this motherboard totally useless and now I am fed up with this project and need it gone and I don't wanna see them again.
Here are the conditions for these two T520's:
Both have NVS 5400M and 802.11n Intel 2.4G wireless, working DVD-RW burners and neither have any hard drives (one pair of rubber mount will be included). Both lids seem in decent conditions.
The keyboards on both are being repaired when my silver pen arrives to redraw the corroded traces within the membrane
Specs:
Machine 1 (The one that was originally working in my hands):
The only thing it needed to work is a new motherboard (or replace the BQ24742 chip if you have the expertise, I have one spare chip from the lot of 5 that I bought. Not sure if I have fixed the CMOS time circuit properly as sometimes removing the power source will reset the time) and a hard drive
i7-2860QM
8GB RAM (Both 16 chip and can be useful for T/W500)
1080p AUO glossy LCD with one dead pixel
9 Cell battery holding for about 50% capacity
135W charger
palmrest is a bit cracked up and the touchpad sticker bumpers are slowly disintegrating. Has smartcard reader with no fingerprint scanner.
bottom cover has some discolouration and the RAM door is scratched
Machine 2 (Parts machine):
Many components broken or missing so I will just list whatever is included instead:
"Complete" LCD lid assembly with a broken display cable and display as well as one missing screw cover. This one has the Bluetooth cutout on the T520 badge.
Bottom cover
Magnesium support frame with a few drilled through holes at the hard drive area
Daughter board with the always powered USB port plastic missing
Screws securing the daughter board, motherboard, magnesium frame are all included, 4 of the 6 screws securing both hinges are included. No other screws are included from the bottom chassis
Dead motherboard with my attempted fix of the BQ24742 chip and one attempted MOSFET replacement, and IC's on the back near that area are shifted and need to be corrected.
Dual core i3 CPU for placement
Heatsink assembly is included
palmrest has a fingerprint reader with no smartcard reader, but also has the drilled through holes
Hard drive door and RAM door all have holes through them
Nothing else on this laptop is included
I will sell both at a low price of C$150+postage (far less than what the i7-2860QM, 1080p display and the RAM sticks are worth)
DM if interested or have any more questions
I will include pictures after I cleaned them up tomorrow
Again I kinda want it gone asap and never think of this project again.
To be clear I will still continue to own and use ThinkPads as well as the Latitudes that I have, I just don't wanna see those duo again.

Is anyone interested before I rip out the CPU RAM screen charger and throw everything else in the bin?

kfzhu1229, did you ever get the keyboards back to a working condition?

Thanks.

That is the only T520 I've heard of having a Smartcard reader besides mine.

Must have been a rare option. I wouldn't have thought so though for its era and how many were business leases.

Yes I did get it back working. However it is not perfect that some LEDs don't work and the trackpoint scroll and right click buttons don't work. It was more of a proof of concept that the silver pen does work for this thing, though the paste generated by that thing rubs off unlike the silver paste Lenovo used.

I believe one palmrest has the opening for the smartcard reader and the other has a contactless one or something. Can't make sense of the smartcard options on the ThinkPads... The D6xx/D8xx Dells all have a physical reader and the E64xx/E65xx Dells all have a contactless one with some also coming with a physical one and they are always hidden right underneath the PCMCIA or Expresscard cage.

Well I suppose it brings no pleasure for any of you to know that I eventually have no luck with this thing in this kind of shape, so I ended up gutting out its high end components to put on a working Dell Latitude E6520 that I found for cheap and sell that instead.
I am planning to give this T520 to my mum as a secondary machine now.
