WTB - T61 With A 15.4 inch WideScreen

#1 Post by newyorkpaulie » Thu Dec 17, 2020 10:59 am

Looking for another T-61 with the large screen. I have one already and want a twin so I can swap my HD between the two places where I live. I do not need memory cards, hard drives, batteries (got them already). I would like it to be in reasonably good shape and it must have a bright screen for my 82 year old eyes!

If you post your MTM someone can sell you a matching 15.4" T61 with either Intel graphics or NVIDIA NVS 140M or the corresponding T61p chip.
That way you won't have driver issues when you repeatedly swap your hdd between them.

Would that be a problem. If they have different graphics then with both types of driver installed on the HDD/SSD the appropriate one would be loaded at bootup time. If using W10 the correct one would self instal anyway.
Good idea though to have both machines the same. Its one less thing to play up.

in windows 10 everything will reinstall whenever it detects that the motherboard is not the same one anymore. I think it will remember the settings for your two laptops but every time you swap you will have the installing devices screen, which doesn't take long if you have an ssd.
However I don't know whether that might also mess with your windows activation...

I actually do this with two T61s. If using XP this just loads and works installing correct drivers automatically. A W10 instal only shows activated in one T61 on the other one it shows not activated but still boots and works anyway.
I also have a dual boot W10 SSD with an activated partition for each T61. All programs and data are on a separate D: partition thus avoiding any syncing of data hassles.

From the MTM, this is your original configuration:
ThinkPad T Series laptops ThinkPad T61 6457-6DU T7500(2.2GHz), 2GB RAM, 100GB 7200rpm HD, 15.4in 1680x1050 LCD, 128MB nVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Bluetooth, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, 9c Li-Ion, WinVista Ultimate

That corroborates your inxi report and also confirms your resolution -- WSXGA+, which has a similar dot pitch to the 14.1" 4:3 T61 SXGA+.
So probably it's a good idea to keep that constant too, so the text and images will be the same size on both machines so you don't have to readjust yourself between the machines.

I've got an 08/08 or later dated 15.4" T61 with the same NVIDIA chip (meaning this is less likely to fail) and some bright but uninstalled WSXGA+ screens somewhere -- so if you don't get something let me know, I'll have some time early next week.

Also your options increase if you decide to utilize an ultrabay hdd in some manner, for example you can store your data on that and just transfer it between the machines,

Actually the MTM can normally be found on a sticker on the bottom saying "TYPE.." It is also the prefix of the serial number as seen in BIOS. You can look up the specs by MTM using the "MTM" link at the top of this screen. Problem is some Thinkpads have got "CTO" as part of MTM - "configure to order" and then you can't find the specs that way. I'm just saying this in case you need to hunt for a T61 on ebay.. If the TYPE is not visible in the photos and in description you can always ask the seller about the sticker or for a screenshot of the first screen in BIOS.

Very reasonable advice. There are plenty of T61-s on US ebay I think, more than here in Europe. However finding a 1680x1050 one may still be hard..

He he 08/08, that's nice. 08/08 and 08/09. Newyorkpaulie, these are the only two relative "safe" dates for NVidia chips. The date is on that sticker on the bottom.

However postage across Atlantic will cost. Would be nicer if a suitable T61 showed up in the US, either from this forum or from ebay.. And speaking about nVidia, wouldn't an Intel graphics one be preferred in this case? I'm not sure now well Windows will be able to switch between the two machines..

The OP is running linux and his way is better than reading the base sticker, it is being read from the motherboard itself. If the motherboard was replaced (by an Intel graphics one for argument's sake) the base sticker would still read the same.

Windows 10 would either way tell you it's updating itself every time you swap between the machines because it detects a different motherboard.
And well if the OP wants to use Windows 10, the poor driver support of the Intel iGPU is just gonna make for a much worse experience. Anything that uses a bit of hardware acceleration might show graphical artefacts, such as the built in Photos and videos app showing white boarders instead of black. Plus on my Latitude D830 with the same iGPU I had issues with the output quality by the iGPU under WSXGA+ resolution, that the image looks like it had its bitrate compressed by YouTube. Maybe under a crap WXGA screen the screen quality isn't good enough for you to tell.
The latest driver for the NVS 140M is over 5 years newer than the one for the Intel GM65 iGPU.

Ah right! Sorry I missed it. Was probably tired.. Okay so

a) congrats on a good choice of OS
b) it makes it a lot easier to swap the HDD :)

Thumbs up for a 2nd T61

Linux mint.. I wonder if Linux Mint would switch seamlessly if you move the HDD between machines with nVidia graphics and a machine with Intel graphics. I kind of expect it would..

You're certainly right. And I apologise if OP already knew.. I wanted to help him search on ebay as he may have to. It doesn't look certain we'll find one to sell here among forum members on the right side of Atlantic..

I can sell you such a laptop in good condition for $150 plus shipping. This is bare laptop only, no battery hdd or a.c. adapter. It will have some memory installed but can't say how much. I select them by condition not specs. It will have the more reliable Intel graphics.

I do have a couple with working nVidia graphics I can do for $100, but nVidia motherboards in laptops made before August 08 have only Returns for DOA. All others have 30 day return. The nVidia chips could last years or days and there is no way to tell. They have been stress tested and I believe the nVidia units have Middleton bios installed.

Send me pm if interested.
