FS: T61 for parts with new-old-stock nVidia NVS140M

#1 Post by excelsior » Sat Jun 12, 2021 11:47 am

It is time to sell my daily driver Thinkpad T61 to another enthusiast.
Hopefully the parts will be useful for another's project.

T61 8892-02U
with new-old-stock nVidia NVS140M from Tuus (from https://www.theboardroom.info/t61mobo.html) New motherboard FRU is 42W7873 : new revision with Penryn CPU (T8100/T8300/T9300/T9500/X9000) support in January 2008. This motherboard was installed in 2019.

Middleton bios applied. With this it can see up to 8GB Ram and SATA-II speeds with an SSD Hard Drive.

CPU Intel T9300
4 GB RAM installed
4:3 IPS screen 1400 x 1050. Looks great. I do not see any scratches or dead pixels. There is some yellowing in the overall color when compared side-by-side with modern screens, but I do not notice it when using the T61 by itself.
**No HDD**, but HDD caddy included.
Has a very worn Thai/English keyboard.
CD/DVD drive
90 W Power supply
Battery will take a charge, but only lasts about 30-45 minutes.
No bios password.

The reason I am listing it as "for parts" is because in the past month I cannot get Windows 10 to boot anymore. It freezes with some device driver problem while loading. I was able to reinstall windows 10 and use it successfully, but then during reboot it stalled again in the same spot. Interestingly, I installed Windows 7 and it worked fine. Then tried to install Windows 10 and had the same problems all over again. All this was tested on June 11, 2021.

Another concern I had over the past 2 years of using it was that the CPU ran hotter than the original motherboard from 2007 with the T7300 CPU. If I had parts, I would try a different CPU and see if that cooled it off a bit.

I've reached the limit of my technical skills to keep this machine running. I'm hoping you can make it useful somehow.
For sure, the screen looks great, CPU, RAM, DVD/CD drive, caddy, etc. all good.

Not sure if there is a typo here but I have never seen nor sold an NOS motherboard with fru 42w7873. This part number was discontinued before the nVidia bugs were resolved. I did sell a few used ones 8 or 10 years ago but the NOS. Boards have a different number.

With more info I could confirm if I sold a motherboard to this member.
