WTB a modest thinkpad, not sure which one to get

Leaving for 6 weeks in mexico on Feb 15 and need a laptop to take with me. I use a T41 at work, but can't take the company machine although I plan to do some work.

From what I have read, it seems like it would be good to get something inexpensive (450 - 650-ish possible?) now while I wait for the T40s to come down a bit more. But I'm having a terrible time trying to figure out whether to focus on a T30 or R40, or maybe an R50...

I am a novice web designer, so need enough oomph for some photo/graphics, but no gaming power. I am loathe to live w/o a touchpad, but otherwise pretty flexible.

Recommendations/offers to sell welcome. (Been looking on ebay, but this forum is scaring me!)

Muchas Gracias, Tova

Whats your price range, that will help determine what to get?

Asspenny, Tova said her price range was $450 - $650, which means she will need to buy something used.

You may want to check IBM Certified Used http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/store ... Id=2576396

Also, on ebay check Absolute Raleigh (member id: absoluteraleigh) who is a member of this forum. I've also had good luck with Jays (member id: jays_computer_parts)

Thanks for the suggestions/offers

draco2527: your t40 sounds like a pretty good deal, but I am in a time crunch. do you have any idea when it might be back from service? and by the way, what was wrong with it that you are having serviced?

dsvochak: thanks for the tips! i'll check them out!

Here is the thread on draco2527's problem:

If the problem has been fixed, then $650 is a good deal.
