Looking for a couple of HD drive's, need IBM FRU # 82H8489 and/or FRU # 45H8791. These are 2.1 Gb & 3.0 Gb, respectly. Don't know their equiv. in other mfg. , if you do let me know. J.D

those are pretty old drives..
do you have the travelstar model number..?

There are some on Ebay. Do a smart search with the FRU number (check "Search title and description"). Do you need it for a ThinkPad 760?

Those are the only nr.'s in the repair man. They are for a 755CS, and yes they are old. I saw two 2.1's on e-bay but thought I'd try here first. J.D

755 will support UP TO a 6gig..

755 series required a HDD caddy..
black plastic thing with an interface cable..
some surgery is required when using anything above an 800meg HDD since at that time the drive addressing spec was reversed..

otherwise, most any 17mm or thinner 6gig or less HDD will work just fine..

looking at the ide pins (above) on the HDD..

note the one missing "key" pin and the two missing "space" pins..
the 4 pins thus isolated are the addressing pins and numbering from right to left ( <-- ) we will call them pair 1 and pair 2..

in reality pair 1 is reserved for factory use..

it is pair 2 we are concerned with..

while the plugs never changed, the specification did along about the time the 1gig was superceded by the 1.4gig and the 2gig..
the 1gig used the old spec where pair 2 was shorted to indicate that this drive (in a two drive steup) was the master or controlling drive (like most guys) and the other drive was the slave (or girl) drive..

ok, back to lesson 1, iteration 93755235..

in OLD thinkpads..
thery expect an OLD spec HDD..
so if you are using a newer HDD, then pair 2 must be isolated..
easy to do..
some clip the pins (pair 2) but this neans that this drive is not crippled..

and, if you want to use another 6gig or less drive in the same system, you need to clip more pair 2 pins on the next drive..

what I did was cut the traces on the interface cable in the HDD caddy..
or i would just cut one..
or i would desolder the female parts of the header that connects to the HDD and pull the parts out..

most opt for the pin clipping deal since it goes fast..

keep this saved someplace because this is the last time i will do this much typing on this subject..
