Have $1000 to spend...what should I buy?

Okay, my wife says I can buy another Thinkpad (currently a 600E 400mhz owner and satisfied with my machine) and spend up to $1000 for it...as a anniversary gift.

Question is, what Thinkpad should I buy for the money? Any suggestions? I don't really need anything fancy...just a good 'ole reliable Thinkpad that isn't too heavy to carry back and forth to work...would like USB2 and DVDrom...possibly CDRW/DVD unit if possible and good amount of memory and speed. I have a 40gig HD I can put in it if no HD is included...also have OS/software with licenses so if not loaded with these things, can save the money and buy a better Thinkpad.

Thanks for any suggestions/place to buy your suggested model.

you want a lot for that $1000..
you can get a T30..
or an A30p, maybe..
or any of a bunch of really nice thinkpads..

for portability check out the X30's..
not much in the way of optical drive unless you get the ultrabase..

Is this a pretty good deal? Didn't like the X30 due to the small (12") screen. Is the A30p the larger/heavier thinkpad or is that the A or T 31?? It looks pretty good if it isn't. All of these letters and numbers for Thinkpads is soooo confusing....wish someone would do a sticky with the slowest/oldest/cheapist thinkpads (like the 365, etc.) listed on up to the best....highest, etc. (like the T42p, etc.)...hint, hint.

lewdvig....thanks! I'll definitely keep it in mind. Looks like a great machine at a great price. It's a bit heavy as well as doesn't have USB2.0...but other than that, it's right up my alley. How many rpm's is the Hard Drive and what kind of shape is it in? Is there any warranty at all left?

It has no scratches and is very clean. The screen is perfect - bright and no dead/stuck pixels.

The only issue is that the screen latches are broken.

It is definitely heavy - more a portable workstation than a notebook.

With shipping, $1120 (U.S.). It is upgraded with CDRW/DVDRW as well as having half a gig of RAM and the A/B wireless mini-pci card installed, with floppy! Also has 2 year of its warranty left. I think I got a hell of a deal!

I bought a T22 for 550. It comes with just about everything you are looking for. If you look hard enough, you can find them with a warranty that is so helpful.

Just a thought. I love mine.

Only two set backs...wireless and USB 2.0.

Wow - I was looking for a forum to post a question almost identical to this one.... spooky!

I, too, have a 600E Pent II 400, and although I love the thing, it just doesn't have the ponies to get the job done any more (at least in a timely manner!). I use mostly MS Office products, but also work with networked applications and some graphics (Visio).... usually simultaneously!

I've been looking at the used PC market, and thinking & pricing the T23 or the T40 models. Any PC I buy would have to have at least 9 - 12 months+ left on the IBM warranty, and if possible, I need a docking station in the deal. Yes, I'm sure I'll have to pony up another $50 - $75 for that!

I can come up with about $1100 right now, tops. Can't go into any payments. I'm an independant consultant, spend about 50% of the time on the road, and although I go to great lengths to coddle & protect my PC equipment, I have no use for Costco/Best Buy plastic laptops. My job depends on my PC, so I buy IBM, and I buy only the T series. It doesn't need to be maxed out with every conceiveable option, but it has to work!

Now that we got the testimonial out of the way.... for the money I'm looking to spend, and considering that I tend to hang on to a PC until it just doesn't get it done any more (I've had my 600E for almost four years), two questions:

1) Would I be better off skipping the T23, saving my money, and shooting for a decent T40 (or T41)?

2) On the display screen resolution, 1024x768 is just acceptable on my 13.7" 600E screen for my "double-nickel" eyes . Even on a 14.1" screen, I would think that I'd sure want to stay away from a SXGA 1400x1200 resolution screen, correct?

Appreciate any feedback you all may have, but, NO, folks, I ask that you please do not bury me with offers to sell your old PC to me!

Bruce has offered a T30, the price is right and he says some warrentee still available. Take it! Or get something like it. Bruce is a good guy to deal with, he will treat you right.
