WTB: T40 Parts

#1 Post by BigKahoona » Thu Jul 13, 2006 3:14 pm

Hi All !!
First Post .... New to the forums .....

I've had a few IBM Thinkpads in the past, now I've been givin MOST of a T40, off corporate lease. The IT department decided to strip the T40 of a few essential parts ....

Here's what i'm looking for to get this T40 up and running:

1 - Hard Drive WITH caddy and the cover thingy
Doesn't matter much the size, preferably anthing over 20GB

2 - Battery -- Hopefully with some kinda life still left in it.

3 - Power Adaptor - Most important thing right now ....
(don't even know if the T40 is going to power up)

All these item I know I can purchase from ebay, but my past experiences have been less that great. From all the browsing I have done so far in these forums, looks like there are reputable people here.......

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Cheers,
BK

Welcome to the Forums.

For a HD with caddy, see the offerings here in the FS Forum from Brent Presley, an extremely trusted seller.

Check the listings here for a battery, I've seen a few offered recently.

A power brick will be a bit more difficult as most users can usually find a use for two or more, so they're rarely offered for sale. Check local computer vendors for universal power adapters, there are several good ones on the market from iGo, Kensington, etc.

OK, will look into the HD postings.

Battery is no big thing at the moment, there are lots of sites that list them.

Great tip on the power brick, never thought of that one, will check the local stores shortly

Thanks for the tips

Hey gents.

Currently the only HDs I've got in stock are:
60GB 5400RPM Hitachi - $60 shipped
80GB 4200RPM Hitachi - $68 shipped

All the drives have the proper caddy for a T4x, but I do not have a HD cover.

Let me know if you are interested.

JHEM - thanks for the reference. :-)

Brent,
Thanks for the offer. Just one quick question though.

Do you need the HD cover to actually hold the drive in the ThinkPad ?

Basically, if I do not have a HD cover, will the HD fall out or flop around ??

I suppose if I really need one I can always call IBM/Lenovo and order one ....

Only if you shook it very hard in an attempt to dislodge the HD.

The friction of seating the HD on the internal IDE connector is sufficient to keep the drive in place during all but the most aggressive attempts to remove it.

But, better to have the cover than not as it is also the attachment point for the HD securing screw.

The HD Cover part number is 13N5530.

Honestly, the drive will work just fine w/o the cover as long as you have the caddy and (like JHEM said) don't bounce the laptop around.

The covers are hard to find, so you are probably going to have to go to eBay to get one.
