well, further to my misadventures, I finally got my R40 back from the repair shop. They had it for 2 months, and didn;t do a thing.. they said they couldn;t repair it. I had to almost threaten them to return my emails and phone calls.
So much for me referring them to anyone else.

Finally, it's back - and still dead.
It powers on, I get the cpu fan spinnning, some heat from the cpu, power light, the battery charges, cd rom spins up, but no display. tried swaping lcd, backlight, nada.

so, in a last ditch effort to save this, before I sell it for parts.

if anyone has a working R40 (P4-M ) motherboard...
cheapest on ebay is $180, from Malasia.

tia

If it will help with a 3-way trade, I have copies of the R40 recovery disks.

@Bassclef: If you have some spare T2x parts, I can send copies of the Disks to Bugs_Y for you.

guys, you are amazing! never thought I'd find a board without selling a kidney... :)
I do definitely want that board. Please and thank you!

I have the following (T20) and other parts:

Thinkpad A21m (base unit and lcd top)
- needs LCD (has lcd cable)
- Works on external monitor
- laptop powers on but has CRC 0175 error (It can be repaired for $30)
- or replace the eeprom itself and motherboard is good.
- all memory and modem plastics included (HDD cover missing)
- built in floppy included
- no ac adapter, no ram, no cd rom, no hard drive

Thinkpad T20 (2 of them)
T20 #1
Base unit includes palmrest, keyboard, motherboard, PIII 700 MHz cpu, PCMCIA slots, Mini PCI modem card, memory cover, hinge cover
No HDD cover, no drives of any kind, no ac adapter
This boots intermittantly (not sure what problem is, might be bad memory)

T20 #2
base unit, motherboard and plastic only NO CPU
Windows 2000 Certificate of Authenticity attached
Unable to test, I don't have a cpu for this unit, It is a socket 479.

Thinkpad A30 LCD plastic
LCD back cover, front bezel (is cracked, but still functional)

Misc. Parts
Spare LCD cable, possibly from a T20. I don't believe it is a working cable.
(2) PIII 700 Mhz Intel CPU # SL4JZ
couple spare minipci modems
T20 battery, condition not new, but should hold a minimal charge at least (for bios flash etc.)
T20 (original) Recovery cd's (win95, and aplications CD)

now, how do we all work this deal?

thanks guys for making the deal come through!
The motherboard arrived safe and sound!
It didn't solve the problem however... same symptoms.

don't know if it's my 1.8Ghz cpu that is not supported, or my cpu is bad. Just found out it's a Celeron (SL6J4) 1.8Ghz.

thread title updated

Glad to hear that the board arrived safe and sound.

Sorry to hear that the problem hasn't been solved....BUT, lets keep it positive...maybe only the processor died. They you have a spare board to work with.

If you need it, I have a spare R40 base (plastics) that I bought, simply for a ram cover, since it was the same price.

thx, I think its a case of my doing another stupid human trick.
The cpu I have now is a celeron, which I just found out....
I thought it was a regular Mentium M 1.8GHz.

From reading some other threads I believe the celeron is definitely not compatible with this board.

so off to find another cpu :)

The recovery cd arrived today :) me very happy... :D :D
Celeron is not supported by R40 board so you got to det a Pentium M 400mhz FSB and up to 1.7 Ghz ...
