Newb question on value, is this worth it?

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, the T-series forum seemed more for issues or whatnot related to the machines, and I didn't see any similar machines back within the last 5 pages of posts to compare on price...

I have an opportunity to purchase a T22 2647-8BU
P3-900, 128 RAM, 30gb HD, No optical drive, 14" lcd, battery/ac adapter included, no os

The HD cover is missing, small crack in palmrest has been repaired, and the screen has a couple small light spots (pressure marks??)
10 day doa warranty
for $168 shipped

I also have an option on a T22 2648-5VU
P3-900, 256 RAM, FDD, no HD, no Optical Drive, 14" lcd, port replicator, AC Adapter and battery
couple light spots on the LCD
for $170 shipped
great deal, good deal, halfway decent deal, or not worth it?
Any advice would be appreciated!

As a point of reference, I recently bought a T20 800mhz, 384mb ram, 13.3" lcd with about 5 pressure marks,cdrw/dvd drive and two tiny cracks in the screen bezel for about $150 (no HD, but I had one). Granted it was a great deal, I don't think your deal is unfair. However, once you add a decent amount of memory, a dvd or cdrw/dvd drive and the hd cover, you're looking at about $215-$240-ish (depending on how much memory and type of optical drive).

If you happen to have the spare parts for it, then it is definitely worthwhile. Being on this forum has completely changed what I believe to be a fair price for a ThinkPad. Two months before I came here, I was paying $130-150 for 600e's and a 570, like an idiot.

The 14.1" makes it more appealing, and the OS isn't a big issue since you can get recovery CD's for next to nothing. If the battery holds a decent charge that would be a big cost saver after the initial purchase.

Doesnt sound horible, but its not that great either. I think you can get one with a bit more ram, optical drive, and instact for about that price.

Thanks for all the responses... I think after reading these I may hold off a bit and look more... or maybe make an offer on the one with the HD a bit lower than the $168 shipped...

BTW, I have an extra DVD-ROM drive from my T23 purchase which would work on a T22. Occasionally it won't read certain discs, but it usually works fine. If you are interested, let me know. I am willing to let it go for $10 shipped.

The lure of low price snags many people. Like others mention, you have to add up all expected costs then compare your options. Once you load up a T23 with memory, new battery, WiFi solution, you could have purchased an R51 or T40. This is dicussed on the forum every week.

Of course, many learn by experience.

That being said, there are occasional deals in the sub-$200 range, often with the T-, X-, and A-series models. You have to be a good researcher and a little lucky on eBay.

I agree. Low prices aren't everything. It also depends what you're going to use the laptop for and how much money you want to spend.

Mostly, probably web surfing, email, word processing, maybe watching movies, listening to music, daughter doing schoolwork, and just having something I can take with me when I'm away, or still use when I don't feel like being tied to my desk

As far as how much I want to spend, as little as I can for as much as I can get?

Seriously, right now I don't have a whole lot to work with(definately under $200, preferrably under $150), which is why the thought of getting a slightly incomplete (but still usable) machine doesn't bother me too much.
The one with no optical drive is nice as it has a HD, but I have a 2.5" HD at home in a external casing I could use for a laptop, which made me think the one with no HD and no optical, but did include a port replicator, might be nice. But I'm seeing that the consensus seems to be that for the prices I was saying, I should be able to get a similar machine that's either complete, or at least if it's incomplete, has more RAM

T20, T21, T22's & X20, X21, X22's are the right neighborhood. A-series are in that range, too, but weigh too much for travel.

A 500Mhz or 650Mhz 600X would fit that description.

The fact that you can buy a decent laptop computer for less than $200 is amazing to me. That's less than I paid for the video card of my PC.

I want to thank you all again for the helpful responses, it's given me a lot of insight, and probably stopped me from just jumping on one of those incomplete T22s for almost $200, which is a REALLY good thing, cause if I'd bought one of those, I wouldn't have been able to go for the one I just got

Just snagged a Tested, powers on and boots up T23 1.2GHz, 256 RAM, Floppy, seemingly good (or at least somewhat functional) battery, no optical drive, no HD (but that's ok I have a 40gb notebook HD here I can use) for $110 shipped

Even though it's not complete, it is within my budget that I have to work with at the moment, and it shouldn't cost *too* much to complete it.

Now, who has a spare HD caddy and cover they're willing to part with, and what's a reasonable price?

Congrats. The 1.2GHz T23 is the best CPU available for the T23, it should be nice and fast.
