Good price! Can't believe the price of T42 drops so quick.
Is it because of the coming of Vista?

Computers (and many other things) are cheaper in North America than in Europe. Still, I agree that this is a good price.

According to ltwbook.pdf, the T42 15 inch screens were XGA (1024x768) or SXGA+ (1400x1050).

The T42p did have a 15" UXGA (1600x1200) display available.

Since I'm ignorant and limping by with a 770ED, could someone tell me what it would cost to put a decent amount of ram in this thing?

thanks,

Can you define decent? It will take up to 2GB.

The 512MB that's already in this unit is fairly good for Windows XP. If you want more, you can check the prices on newegg.com. Look for PC2700 modules.

Couple of questions as I am heavily considering this:

1. Secure chip - Does that mean it has the fingerprint scanner? I can't tell from the pictures.

2. Do you have a set of R&R discs for this machine?

3. If I sent you paypal, how long would it take for you to ship to 91740 in California? I know customs can take a while...

4. How do I transfer the warranty?

5. Will this machine be faster than a T41P if upgrade the CPU in a T41P?

6. Does it have everything it came with from the factory?

I ask because I have a thread going on over in the T4x area. I am looking to purchase a T4x series machine. A T41p would be sweet. There is a link I posted to one from Thinkpad World for $849 + shipping. I need to know which machine is better. I am still quite confused about a number of things as they relate to the T4x series.

Your machine is very tempting because of the 15" LCD which means I can upgrade to 1600x1200 later down the road. I am concerned because the T41p I am looking at has the FireGL chip. Double the amount of RAM.

Also, Bill said this machine (yours) can go to 4GB of RAM. Is that true for the ENTIRE T4x line? If not, what machines can go that high? I ask because that amount of RAM would be great and add to the longevity of the machines life over the next few years.

I want a machine to last me atleast 3 years. Heck I am typing this on a 1GHz Powerbook G4 Titanium. We all know that while it's a great machine, it's getting long in the tooth. I have it at max RAM and a 100GB seagate HD. That's as far as it will go.

Thanks again. If it works out that your machine will better suit my needs I will more than happily buy it from you for the $650CDN price listed.

Whoops..

I aid I'd buy for $650CDN.

What was I thinking?

I meant I'd take it at your price listed.

This is assuming that graphics are going to be atleast equal to the speed of a FireGL.

Sorry about the confusion.

1. no. secure chip doesn't mean it has finger print reader
2. no discs
3. i don't accept paypal unless you cover the fees 5% that i get charged and wait that the money is cleared to my account before i ship which should take few days.
4. i'm not sure about that.. i think the warranty is on the machine itself and not the person.. maybe someone else can answer this?
5. i'm not sure of this neither...
6. i only have the ac adapter that came with. nothing else

about upgrading this machine to 1600x1200?? that i'm not sure if this can be done too  if so i'd keep it !! :D

and yea the price is not 650$cnd but 790$cnd !! big difference

Well based on the lack of paypal, it looks like I am going to have to pass. I have enough in my account to cover the purchase of a laptop and yours was extremely tempting. However for slightly more I can get a T41p with all the trimmings plus everything it originally shipped with, 6-month IBM warranty and 3 year Mack warranty.

I do appreciate everything that has been done on my behalf in oder to see if we could make a deal. I have been hemming and hawing all day about which machine to buy. I truly do wish you the best in selling this machine. It is an excellent laptop and will serve it's new owner very well.

That being said, might I suggest that you fire up R&R and make a set of restore discs? That would be very helpful to a new buyer and might increase the value of your laptop a little bit.

Again, thank you for the wonderful opportunity to consider your laptop. I sincerely hope you don't take anything about this personally. I just need to buy the best machine for my buck, and you got beaten. I wish you and yours all the best. Oh and one more thing:

Have a Happy New Year! :) :) :) :)

that is a very good price for an excellent thinkpad..
please SOMEONE buy it before i succumb to temptation and grab it..

the 15 inch 1050x1400 is a beautiful display and what no one else seems to have mention is that it is a flexview display..

and the warranty is on the thinkpad not the owner..
(things might have changed under lenovo, though)

Put it on ebay

I tried to sell my somewhat similar T42 model here for a couple of days and gave up. Buyers looking at systems here (or at least the great majority of them) are either interested in the latest and greatest at a good price, or in a "starving student" type deal. Your T42 fits neither market niche.

I was very happy with the sale I did on ebay last week. I found that the site has markedly improved their tools for writing up your item for sale and it was quite easy to get the laptop listed in under half an hour.

What I did gave me total control over who I sold it to and eliminated the hassles I've had selling expensive stuff on ebay in the past. What I did was I put it up as "Buy it Now" with "Best Offer," only, which is to say that some loser with zero feedback (or worse) can't come along and ruin your auction at the last second or cause you to constantly monitor the bad bids.

You can exclude people who don't have Paypal Accts.(they say this eliminates 80% of the non-paying bidders), people with bad feedback ratings, etc. from the auction. If you price the item $50 or $100 more than people are going to pay (I would suggest you price it around $750-775) then you won't get an actual buy-it-now purchase but what you WILL get is offers. Set it up to automatically refuse ultra lowball offers (I'd suggest anything below $500) so you don't have to deal with vultures and turkeys. My own laptop was worth a bit more as it had 1gb of RAM plus a 60gb 7200rpm drive in it.

Someone who is reliable and has good feedbacks will come along and offer you $50 or $100 less than what you want to take, then counter with something reasonable, and odds are you will have sold it and be done with this whole hassle of selling a used notebook. Prior to this laptop I just sold, I gave the last one away to the local library because I did not want to deal with ebay. Having seen how they have improved their options for sellers, I'd not hesitate to go this route again.

Good luck.

Not to nitpick, but i think this deal is a lot better.

If Bill doesn't succumb to temptation.. i'm very interested in the screen/tft only, because mine has a [censored] pressure mark (long story...pure idiocy in the early morning) and is bugging me like hell.

But that sounds stupid, as your machine is still under warranty. Good luck, i know someone will buy this... it's a crazy good deal compared to prices over here 8)

I'll shut up now.

It's also my experience that it's fairly hard to sell relatively expensive Thinkpads on this forum. I agree with the two problems that you cited, but there are at least two more:

1) Most members of this forum already have many Thinkpads and don't really need yet another one; and

2) For some reason many people here feel that we ought to be selling for less than what they can get on eBay. If a senior member is selling a well-maintained T42 for $700 here and a total stranger is selling a T42 with similar specs but in unknown condition on eBay for the same price, these people would rather buy from the latter. I remember that several weeks ago, someone chided Brent for not selling some of his SODIMMs for cheaper than the lowest price he could find on eBay. Why certain people have such a mentality is beyond me.

I'm generally interested in machines of this class when I look to upgrade (i.e. not right now). I don't want the latest and greatest because it's full of bugs and proprietary crap and I want something that can run Linux reliably. The starving student-type stuff often tempts me but tends to have annoying limitations like 256M or 512M max ram capacity. And finally with these larger machines I always really want UXGA, can live with SXGA+ but never want XGA. I like this place better than ebay so I do hope these machines keep getting posted here. This just isn't the right time for me to buy another serious thinkpad (maybe in a few months).
