Estimated Price of T40P 2373G5U and accessories?

I have a 3 year old 2373G5U with a 9-cell battery and its warranty just finished. However just before its warranty ended, I gave it a full maintenance workup with a new motherboard, hard drive, keyboard, mouse buttons, modem/sound, and wireless card.

The reason I am thinking of selling it is because college is finishing for me and I might want to move onto a faster laptop. The specs for the 2373G5U is:

I'll assume that you mean "sell for" when you say "cost". You don't state the overall condition, but I'll assume very good.

This well spec'd T40p should get over $600. T40's have been selling high lately after a market dip. This one has all the right parts including an SXGA+ display. Only an upgraded WiFi card is lacking. With the correct eBay ad or write up, you'll get over $600.

Adapters are worth $20 to $25.

Recovery disks may be worth $25?

Port replicators aren't worth much (you could sell this with the laptop).

Sell the adapters separately, but include one with the laptop.

Also, I recently got my laptop two days ago from the maintenance under warranty that I mentioned in a previous post. So it's in excellent working condition.

But is there any warranty (30 day or something like that) from the recent maintenance performed? Is it possible to extend upon that for $100?

I don't know all the fine details of extending the warranty for the cheapest cost and whether if it is worthwhile.

I use an external wireless card. But if I were to upgrade the internal wireless card, how much would that cost?

I'm surprised you said the port replicator II (which comes with DVI/VGA, USB hub, etc.) won't fetch much. Why do you say that?

And if I were to wait for 6 months to a year, would the prices drop dramatically and if so, how much? I'd like to get the feeling of the elasticity of the price and technology is supposedly very sensitive.

I would have to bow back a bit from that 600+ price. I have seen the poorer equiped T40 going in the 3-400 range, this one nicely equiped would be, i think, 4-500 range.

This one still wouldnt run Vista AeroGlass and that will hinder it in the future (sale wise).

Still a very nice lappy tho. If you wanted to trade some hardware for it, i would be happy to do some of that.

You think that woud have enabled the OP to sell ths T40p for >$100 more? I don't think so. When I was trying to sell my mint-condition X40 with two years of warranty left several months ago, my asking price was $730, but people would rather pay around $500 for a beat-up X40 with less specs and no warranty. My impression is that most people don't think warranty is worth more than $100 per year. I certainly don't.

A rule of thumb is, laptops depreciate 40% per year during their first two years, and then 20% per year afterward. Your T40p is in its 20%-per-year phase.

How did you get the motherboard, hard drive, etc., replaced under warranty by IBM? Was there anything wrong with these items, or did you simply request that they be replaced?

I asked for replacing motherboard because I knew that T40 were prone to USB problems. So with a new motherboard, that problem should be alleviated.

Also the hard drive was becoming old, so I asked them to replace it because of BSOD disk errors. So that is fixed now.

And for the other things, I attributed them to wear and tear. But that is replaced by new parts.

So back to my original question:

You just missed the best deal ever. Between Dec 12th and 20th, everything on Lenovo.com was available at employee prices.

No one knows. I think they had such a sale in early January 2006, and then it didn't happen again until Dec 2006 (and that was only through Visa Card's web site). So, it's probably a once-a-year thing.

I don't know where you go that. I've seen student discount pages that would make me drool. The selection is limited so you can't get every configuration, but if you can still buy through a legitimate student lenovo webpage, you are passing up discounts that can be on the order of 40% and way better than anything I've ever seen offered to the general public, employee price deals, whatever.

Of course if you are in the Scientology Seminary, the student deals might not be quite as good

My alma mater offers alumni Thinkpad packages that are around 40% off the list prices too, but they include lots of features that I don't need, especially bluetooth, fingerprint reader and too much warranty. (Incidentally, they still have 34 T60p's with 15" UXGA IPS! Very tempting!) For customizeable units, I haven't seen anything that beats employee prices.
