Question about DVD drive

#1 Post by tony6264 » Sat Jan 20, 2007 8:24 pm

Does anyone know if a DVD Rom from a 600 series will work in a T20?
even if I have to change the caddy?
thanks

Yes, it should work, and you do have to change the caddy. It's only 7 screws to remove the 600-series caddy and six screws to put on the Ultrabay 2000 (U2K) caddy. You then have to change/modify the front panel (faceplate or bezel) of the DVD drive to fit the 'notch' on the right side of the U2K bay. I've used a Dremel with a cutting wheel to trim the plastic on several drives before as it's usually much harder to find a suitable, pre-made U2K one.

Assuming you are running Windows 2000 or XP then you should be able to use the DVD drive right away as Windows should already have the drivers.

Just to add additional intel:

I have an X22 with Ultrabase X2 which had original IBM DVD-ROM.

I bought a Lite-On slim DVD+RW unit from NewEgg. After moving the brackets from the IBM drive it fits fine except for that notch which has to be dremeled out. I don't think it's easy to move the bezel as the LED and eject buttons are in slightly different spots.

Another consideration

Is that most of the 600 drives are 2X and DO NOT read DVD-R
So if that is a concern, you want to just get a newer real T series drive.
PLEASE DO NOT PM
