Trade trackpoint caps?

#1 Post by quink » Fri Jan 26, 2007 12:30 pm

Anyone up for trading trackpoint caps? My preference is the classic dome and I have a few of other types laying around. Even swap, your favorite for mine?
Post what you have in the thread and what you want.

I have 3 soft dome and 3 soft rim.

http://www.lenovoblogs.com/designmatters/?p=68 has pictures of the different types.

That's a funny survey. How about the people that prefered "command line" to any input device?

I think the survey should have broken out the "soft dome" into two categories, there is the original smooth soft dome and the textured soft dome (aka sandpaper, or as I prefer to call it, cat tongue).

I personnally rank the two quite differently.

Which are you looking for, smooth or cat tongue?

Cool! That means i'm all tapped out.

If you guys have anymore to trade, lets keep this thread alive and help each other out. Seems silly to have to spend $10 just to get a couple of the caps you like and have 4 that are a complete waste.

I have suddenly become a big fan of the soft rim. I tried one briefly a long time ago and thought it felt weird, so I never tried it again, until two days ago when I got my new T60. That T60 had a very worn classic dome cap and I wanted to replace it with one of the spare soft domes that I thought I had, but the only thing I could find was that same soft rim cap mentioned above. So I was forced to use it and after two days, I finally understand the rationale behind the design. Both the classic dome and the soft dome hurt the finger because they push into the most sensitive region of the fingertip, with the former causing more pain than the latter because it contacts the fingertip over a smaller surface area, resulting in a higher pressure (Pressure = Force/Area). But with the soft rim, the cap curves around the fingertip rather than pushing into it. If I were to participate in the poll that Quink had a link to, my preferences in decreasing order would be:

Mouse
Soft Rim
TouchPad
Soft Dome
Classic Dome
Command line
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)
Acer T272HUL; Crossover 404K; Dell 3008WFP, U2715H, U2711, P2416D; Monoprice 10734; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

I'm also a big fan of the soft rim. I can't use anything else!

The soft rims catch under my fingernail, and that's too creepy-feeling for me.

For what its worth I have:

3 x Soft Rim

1 x Soft Dome - This is the default one that comes on most new laptops

13 x Classic domes

I'm happy to send overseas for free. if someone wants to pay for the postage.

We buy 5-6 laptops at a time and no-one even knows that the trackpoints are interchangeable.

If not i'll probably put them all on egay.

If I can find them, I have some classic domes that I"d be willing to trade for any of the others.

I *hate* the classic domes. PST if you're interested and I'll go look for the little baggies.

I only use the Soft Rim type, IMHO it's the best design ergonomically for you finger and for the job that finger has to do.
