You might be running into a problem, since there is a
sticky at the top of this conference, with someone already stating that they are willing to buy these batteries.
P.S.
Per forum rules, your location needs to be broken down a little more than "USA". You can use just the state, like I do, if you are worried about pinpointing yourself.

Why are dead batteries in such demand?
What are they used for?

They can be recycled into working "refurbished" batteries than can be resold. If you have the time (it requires taking apart the battery and refurbishing/testing each individual cell, as well as reprogramming the ROM chip that hold the battery cycle count and wear level).

Yikes! Thanks for the info. Sounds crazy. Refilling a toner cartridge is one thing, repacking a battery is another. If Sony has safety issues, how safe can these be?

They are not regulated. This is why aftermarket and refurbished batteries are ALWAYS cheaper than OEM batteries. You get what you pay for (and not to dis the guys that do this - some of them are VERY good at it. It is just that there are a lot more bad than good).
