By the way in my opinion all that we need is a cd that somebody bought retail and never registered it. Does that make sense.

But to keep things legal we have to watch what we say. Mr gates all by himself crippled our economy and we still will not admit it.

But he has the billions to prove it and he is big enough that he beat the US gov't.

We should try to keep the discussion in the other thread in the Window's OS forum, but I'll reply to your last comment here.

As I said in the other thread, a retail CD will not work with the key on the bottom of the unit. I tried a retail CD and it doesn't accept the key as part of the install. It's very frustrating.

Only OEM media will accept the key (and I wouldn't be surprised if not all OEM media works). It doesn't matter if the media is new or used (or hacked)... it's the sticker with the license key that determines the validity of your installation (afaik).

I've been installing linux on most of my systems to avoid most of this ugliness... but I'm still forced back into Windows for some things.

You are correct. You need an OEM windows 2000 cd.

I have used a retail wind 2000 from another unit before and it worked. If l can find my CD by the time my new hard drive comes l will be ok.

What's this linux o/s. All l need is something to run AOL period.

I have seen Linux o/s for under $10, will this work in the meantime?

Linux is the Alternative to Windows. And BTW, Linux is FREE on the internet. Just do a Google search for Ubuntu (or my favorite Kubuntu) and download an ISO image. Burn the image to a CD and boot your computer from the CD. There you can run Linux off the CD (great for file recoveries) or install it to the hard drive. There is a learning curve for Linux and finding and installing programs is a little difficult, but if you can overcome those challenged, then Linux is great alternative for Windows.

I would note that if you aren't familiar with Linux at all, don't throw all of your eggs in the same basket. As Stargate199 said, there is a learning curve. Installing software isn't as easy, as it is in Windows. You have to unpack files and be decent at general DOS style commands, even though the commands are different.

I have used recovery disks for a T2x to build a harddrive for the 600x. It works well, the 600x and the T20 overlapped for close to a year and the internals of the machines are close.
