I received my new x60s and deleted C:.
Re-installed WinXP on C. When I tried to make a set of recovery CD from the hidden partition, it says "this function is not available."

I did format C: but had left the hidden partition untouched thinking it can restore C: or make a set of recovery cd from it.

I called Lenovo and they wanted $45 + shipping for the recovery cds!!

Just borrow some cd's from a friend, it's not like you don't have a valid key. Both Microsoft and Lenovo can Jog off (hot fuzz vernacular for the win) in this case.

I guess he still hope to restore his thinkpad to the factory state. Without worrying he can miss out unknowingly.

Why would anyone want to restore to the factory state instead of a clean install? I am really curious, because ThinkVantage software is free anyways.

I don't know, maybe if you're on the road, you don't want to be carrying a Vista DVD around, you would just rather use the service partition to get your laptop up and running again in case it craps out. I know I, for one, would like to keep my service partition usable... and besides, there are tools to tell R&R what to load on a re-install (I think it's called Base Software Administrator or something like that. It was on lenovoblogs a while back).

Now, if only someone would be kind enough to make me a copy of their Vista recovery DVD... :)

I guess because the laptop doesn't come with Vista CDs which you need to do a clean install.

Gotcha, guess that would be really handy if you didn't have the ultra base either.

Not all the software is free. WinDVD, Sonic RecordNow!, DLA, and Norton AV are not available for download from Lenovo. Only updates are available, but the updates require that the program be installed first.

How do you think that blue button and service partition works? You blew away the mbr.....

Install RnR and you may be able to boot PE, do a factory recovery, then create a set of recovery media from the restored preload.

It is funny how many people fail to create that media.

Also, Lenovo uses a 3rd party to manage it's Recovery CD parts... Hence the charge in most cases.

Finally.... If you get vista recovery dvd's you are not legally allowed their use with an XP COA. ( for the person who stated that below)

definately have to agree with wackydan,

you most probably blew the mbr.

been looking for it for you, but dont find it right now: lenovo download offers an applet for you to rewrite rr mbr. do a search and you will find it! once i do, i will post it.

I just called the service centre and said that I had a virus and couldn't trust the lenovo partition. They sent the cd's through the mail free of charge.

Thanks for the replies.
I would have called them back because my hidden partition is in fact not accessible for some reason. The only problem is I just had surgery on my vocal cord and can't sleep for 1-2 weeks.

I guess I have to use my Macbook Pro for now. :-)

I'm very sorry about your vocal chord problem. If you had said you couldn't speak for 2 weeks I could understand but I can't imagine not sleeping for two weeks. What gives? Lysdexlia?
