I can buy a used T60, with these specs

Yonah T2400 (1.8ghz)
14" XGA (yuck for me, would much rather SXGA)
1GB of Ram (2 * 512)
60GB HD (5400 RPM. somewhat yuck for me, but fixable)
CDRW-DVD combo drive
fingerprint reader

3 year warrenty expiring in November 2009 that appears to be On Site as warranty lookup says

"This product has a three year limited warranty and is entitled to parts, labor and on-site repair service. Service is available Monday-Friday, except holidays, with a next business day response objective. Many parts can also be delivered to you using the Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) method."

person is willing to sell it to me for $800.

should I jump?

For $800, that's a good deal. I will close my eyes on those "yuck" things for a while, you can upgrade the hdd as you mentioned too.

I'd agree that is a good deal - it's basically the same specs as the T60 I was issued from work a few months ago. It's a stable, work horse machine...

I just think the XGA screen is limiting for software development (at home I use 2 20.1 inch 1600x1200 samsung lcd's - never understood why companies don't get this - it's a productivity issue). Good luck with the unit if you buy it...

Well, Google does. (Actually I think they get 2 24" wide screens, lots of the people have them both vertical) At least that's what I recall when I visited their NYC offices a few months back on a recruiting trip.

It's also not so much for me, but for a female friend, whose a medical resident and her old Pentium-3 Dell is on its last legs (I hate helping her with it, as it has Windows ME, I've considered telling her, "that's it, if you want to not buy a new machine, I'm installing Linux on it"). I just have a hard time judging if XGA is any good or not (typing this on my 15" UXGA T42p, who is running out of warranty in the summer, so just got the LCD replaced )

It seems like people are saying it's a reasonably good price, but nothing "wow, if you dont want it, I'll pay for it and your shipping costs" type deal.

hmm..

if you want a deal with SXGA+ and larger HDD and 1gig memory in one part, not two, then why not look at the T60 i have up for sale.. ??

its $400 more and that might be a deal breaker for you but it has the specs and longer warranty..

Or.....you could consider the T60 I have for sale that has the SXGA, Bluetooth, cdrw/dvdrw, warranty to 5/2010, and new in sealed box!!

price really is the main thing here, as if I wanted, I could get this T60 for a little under $1100 via an academic discount.

Good buy, though if I were getting it for myself I'd spend a few hundred more (again academic discount) and get a more souped up one.

Basically, the TP is competing in price against the weekly $500 el crapo laptop from compusa/best buy/circuit city. Suprising thing is, with Intel's new chips, El Crapo laptop has actually gotten worse (at least in my mind) since the end of the summer (When I got one for my sister), as prices haven't dropped and components are basically the same (perhaps a bigger HD here, better wireless there.... but nothing that makes it really a decent improvement).

All the new weekly $500 yuck's have Vista, yuck!

for $800 w/ depot warranty until 09-29-2009

so relatively happy.

How do I apply for the academic discount I wish to purchase a T60 aswell thanks

if your university has a deal w/ lenovo you get it, otherwise you dont.

I did check my school's website, but sees nothing are there listings on lenovo website as to which organizations they are affiliated with?
