WTB: 600X or T23 or...?

#1 Post by pjc30943 » Sat Jun 02, 2007 1:00 pm

Looking to get something a bit better than my current 600E (366MHz/284Mb/98SE). Mainly to run things like matlab, openCV, and other engineering apps, so it doesn't have to be high-performance...just better than what I have now.

Because of the desired specs and price, probably a higher end 600X (800MHz upgrade?) or T23. Obviously both are cheap on Ebay, but this is a heck of a lot better from here.

Price ballpark: $200. This is just to give you an idea that I don't have the ability to spend much (I'm a grad student...)

Important features, with highest priorities first:
-- reliable (i.e. not a T23 from that 'bad' run of T23s)
-- quiet (i.e. not lots of fan noise)
-- speed>500MHz
-- screen > 13"
-- can run WinXP with no HW issues
-- USB 2.0

Doesn't matter:
-- battery life
-- heat (as long as it's quiet)
-- video specs
-- RS232 or not (can use usb-->rs232 cable)
-- everything else...

Obviously it should be in good shape.

Anyone have something like this available, or have suggestions?

Neither the 600X nor the T23 has USB 2.0. Even the T30 doesn't. The first Thinkpad to have that was the R40 (avoid the R40e, which only has USB1.1). The R40 may also be the cheapest Thinkpad to have USB 2.0, but it would be fairly very hard to find one for under $200.

It looks like the best thing to do would be to keep saving money for a little longer so that you can afford an R40 or T40. Just go to the movies a little less, and eat cheaper food like ramen noodles.

You could still consider the 600X or T23 (or other USB 1.1 systems) and just use a PCMCIA-USB 2.0 adapter. How important is the extra speed of the USB 2.0 port to you?

Well, it's not terribly important, given that it's last on the list.
Good point about the pcmcia adaptor; that will probably do fine.

pjc30943, I just PMed you regarding an apparently pretty nice T30 that has a Buy-It-Now price of exactly $200 shipped on eBay. It still doesn't have USB2.0, but like Ray said, you can just get a PCMCIA USB card.

For great deals like that T30, one needs to act very fast, as in snagging it within minutes.

Yep, I didn't check the forum frequently enough.

How quiet are the A22s compared to the T23?

By the way, I've been getting some offers via PMs. More are welcome of course....

Yes, thanks, I saw it earlier...but was turned away by the screen flaw. Primarily because it's unknown how it appeared, and thus what else may appear later.
Aside from that, it looks to be a great machine.

Hey, that's a great idea! The A22p has a high-resolution 15.0" LCD (1600x1200) and is within your $200 budget. I haven't never used one though, so I can't answer your question.

Anyone else know how quiet they are? Despite searching the forum in more depth for such specifics (and looking at Thinkwiki) I still don't have results on the matter...

My A21p ran pretty quiet. I applied some new thermal solution to the heat sink and gave the system a thorough dusting out when I received it, installed extra ram and added a 5400rpm hard drive and that all helped to keep the CPU load down and heat generation low. The fan only ran after the system was on for awhile and/or an intensive task was running. the system, even with the fan on, was pretty silent.
