What is the value of a Ultrabay 2000 burner these days?

I have a fancy dock coming in the mail, and it has an empty Ultrabay 2000. How much will it cost me to put a CD-RW+DVD-ROM in it? How about DVD-RW? Are there any hacks such as using a generic laptop ODD and a (hopefully cheap) mechanical adapter?

A regular combo should run no more than $40. DVD burner should be about 75-80. My opinion only.

Pick up the cheapest Ultrabay 2000 optical you can that is complete (regular old cd-rom). Remove the rails and the connector. Buy the drive of your liking and attach the rails and connector. It may not look stock, and some minor surgery may need to be performed on the faceplate with an exacto-type knife, but the drive should work. I used to do that when I owned X31's and needed a better/cheaper burner for the Ultrabase.

Just to add to Yak's post.
I've noticed that you are in Waterloo ON. There is a computer store that sells new generic 12.7-mm DVD-burners (Lite-On and Pioneer) relatively cheap (CAD 65-80) - you will still need Ultrabay 2000 rails and connector.
Just my 0.02.
I am thinking about this option now - although I have an external USB DVD burner now.
Thanks,
Val

You can get ultrabay floppy drives to pull rails and a connector from for about $2from Technotrade who are located near Ottawa and Homer Watson in Kitchener. Look them up in the book or get their address on their site.
I think that at one point, they had ultrabay cd rw/dvd drives but those run out.

Awesome, thanks guys.
I'd like some clarification though - will the floppy rails/connector work, or do I need a CD-ROM set?
Also, is it relatively safe to assume that every company's swappable drives contain a standard IDE drive that can be ripped out?
vkim - which store did you have in mind?
Moderators - sorry, this thread seems to be a little off-topic in this forum... Move if desired.

The store is canadacomputers (King and University). Check their web site (
www.canadacomputers.com). I've seen those drives and they are suitable to be swapped with my ultrabay 2000 DVD-rom drive - however the faceplate issue Yak mentioned needs some work.
As per rails, I am not sure, but the ultrabay 2000 floppy rails look different from both Ultrabays 2000 DVD drives. So, I cannot say much about floppy rails/connector.
