I have a mint condition R51 Thinkpad for sale. It has some very minor marks on the outside of the case, but other than that its perfect.

It was always used in the dock to the keyboard is perfect.

The computer has the 1.5ghz Pentium M with 2MB L2 Cache, 768Mb of Ram, a 40gb HD, 14.1" screen, integrated graphics, power adapter, restore discs.

For the right price I will also include a 7200rpm 60gb HD.

I also have the dock for sale with the power adapter.

I will ship it for $425, or best offfer.

Just to throw this at you, would you consider a trade for a T41 P1.6 with a crack in the right back corner, or a T40 P1.3. Just some food for thought...........................................That's all.

Hmmm...given that $450 buys you a T42 these days, probably with warranty left, you'll need a lot of luck to get the money...trades may be the way to go..

And no, I'm NOT looking for an R51-got one too many already.

IMHO, an excellent condition R51 with those spec's, including the 60GB 7200rpm drive, is worth close to $450, esp. delivered.

Some T42's don't have much better spec's - some are 1.5GHz, with less RAM and slower disk.

Also, the R5x's are very durable machines. It's true that some sell in the $350 range with lower spec's, but you have weigh condition and upgrades/accessories (restore disks).

With all due respect to our friend underclocker I've bought 2 T42s last week, one is 1.7 and one is 1.8, both have warranty leftover (10 and 14 months respectively) 1Gb RAM apiece...granted, slower 40/5400 HDDs, but both came to my house for way under $450...

As much as I like certain machines of this generation, their time is up. Period.

All of the above is, obviously, just my opinion.

You were extremely lucky with those T42's. I would expect such nice T42's to cost more than the A31p.

With all due respect to our friend ajkula66, these machines have far from outlived their usefulness. There are people on this forum who conduct their regular computing on much older platforms, after all.

Perhaps I should've phrased things a little differently. What I've meant to say was that the golden days of selling these for high figures are gone...

As for computing on the older platforms, I'm someone who does that all the time, given that my main machine is an A31P...and I have far older stuff in my house...

Speaking of price comparison between T4 series and A31P, here's the deal in my opinion:
a) There will never be another A31P ':banghead:'.
The last of the big, powerful (for its time) three-spindle machines with UXGA screens. A good one is not that easy to find these days, and some people are still willing to pay a premium price (and I'm very thankful to them) for an outstanding example.
b) T6 series resembles T4 series much closer than anything resembles A3 series...and with the appearance of Core Duo, then CD 2 processors, many businesses as well as individuals started getting rid of still perfectly usable T4s, with warranty left and upgrades remaining, therefore saturating the market. The end result is a price drop. This was not the first time (and definitely not the last unless I drop dead today or tomorrow) that I've picked nice T42s for the amount discussed...if you look around postings on this forum, you'll see that there are 2 T42s with quite some warranty left on them and a lot of other good stuff still unsold for $500, from a member in a very good standing...

Once again, my opinion only.

By the way, pianowizard, you wouldn't happen to have an extra QXGA screen, would you?

Nope, but you can easily get one on eBay. Trying to see if your A31p can use it?

No, PW, I think that if I ever put a screwdriver in this poor A31P again, it would explode right in my face out of sheer protest... If this laptop has a single screw that it originally left the factory with, that's a miracle.

I have my eyes on a T42P which needs some major work, so I've figured it would be an interesting project since it already has to be opened...thanks for the advice on eBay, although I have no clue what I should pay for one of these...

Oh, I pretty much agree with all the above posts. Yes you can pick up T42's for less than the offered price of this R51, you can also find R51's for $250, upon occasion. However, I do feel it is worth "close to $450" for the following reasons.

1) I sold an R51 10 days ago in near mint condition, with similar spec's (1.5GHz, 40gb 4200 rpm, 256MB X 2 RAM, CDRW/DVD, etc.) for $350 not including delivery. I think this was a fair price, not a rip off and not the best deal.

2) I then adjusted for the OP's configuration, 60GB UHS drive, extra RAM, original restore disks.

3) Then I said close to $450 including delivery. So, let's say $425. That makes a $75 difference between the one I just sold and this one, but you get larger, much faster HD, more memory including a 512MB stick that doesn't go to waste after one upgrade, restore disks which some sell for $25 alone, and delivery which is worth $20 to $25.

To me it still doesn't seem out of line for someone looking for a quick purchase for a nicely spec'd R51. You can always spend hours on eBay trying to find a better (or worse, as they may turn out) deal.

I was also trying to shed some positive light on the seller's ad. If it was outrageous, like an R40 for $450, I would have shot first.

This R51 will perform quite well as configured with XP.

Exactly. Yes, we can get amazing deals on eBay every now and then, e.g. I picked up a mint-condition T23 for $165 shipped in Aug 2006, when similar units were selling for over $300. But these deals are rare and shouldn't be used to gauge the value of these laptops.

And if you analyze the bidding history, the last known serious bid was at $290, which is a travesty for this machine...OP may want to consider putting a reserve if this laptop goes on eBay again...
