WTB: A30p

#1 Post by tical164 » Fri Jul 27, 2007 9:00 pm

I would like to buy an A30p. I have about $200-300 to spend depending on the specs.

Requirements:
- Very good to excellent cosmetic condition and in perfect working condition with no issues
- internal wireless (802.11b is fine)
- 256 mb ram (2x128 is fine)
- 30 gb hdd (speed doesn't matter)
- dvd-rom
- ac adapter

Please send me a PM or email me if you have something available and are looking to sell soon.

That machine is almost impossible to find with internal wifi. so is the A31p
I have had maybe two wifi A31p units out of dozens. And the A30p I have never seen with internal wifi. They do exist, but are very rare.

Three of the five A30p's in the tawbook are listed as having internal wireless and one even comes with bt. I am open to purchasing an A30p without wireless though if they are that difficult to come by.

I don't quite understand why you'd want an A30p-difficult to come by, and loaded with potential video card issues, when you can add a few bucks and get a less-than-perfect, but still nice A31P, that will eat ANY A30P for breakfast and ask for the next one...

Just a piece of friendly advice from someone who has had them ALL-good, bad and indifferent...

1. I'm cheap. The going rate for an A31p seems to be about twice as much as an A30p.

2. I want the UXGA-IPS screen. I know that the A21p and A22p have UXGA as well although it is not IPS or Flexview. The other problem with them is that the memory maxes out at 512 and is only PC-100 which is still fairly expensive (see #1).

I am aware of the potential for video card problems that is why I am looking for an A30p with no issues. My A30 works fine and I am more than happy using it but a slight upgrade would be nice. An A31p would be too much for my computing needs and is out of my price range.

Thanks for the suggestions and the free bump.

Well, yeah, if you come to me and want to buy an absolutely pristine, loaded-to-the-max A31P, it will run you $500 or better. But what I've been referring to is the fact that you can find a respectable A31P in the price range that you're looking at. It will not have wi-fi or BT, and probably won't be the highest-spec example, but you can configure a 1.7 or 1.8 machine for $300 with no major flaws. And it will do just fine...and then some.

The main reason why I'm pointing you in this direction is the fact that A30Ps, when available, command a fairly high price, compared with what they give in return. Nice they are, dependable they're not. And, apart from looks, they're NOT a match for their younger sibling in any respect.

If you don't find what you're looking for in the respect of a nice A30P, do feel free to contact me and I'll point you to a few possible spots where you can get a cheaper A31P, and live happily ever after...

All the best from an UXGA addict to a future one...

Here is a A31p (not A30p) that has a pretty good BIN price of $350 with higher spec than what you said you were looking for:

Family Daily Drivers- T430s, T530, X220
Work- Sadly, the ThinkPads have gone away...... and replaced by HP ProDesk SFF drone machines :(
Other Projects- Edge 15, Z61m (Titanium)
Historic Retired ThinkPads- T42p, X20, A31p, 701c, 760XD, WorkPad C505

It's also missing a few parts, but has a lot of RAM and a DVD-RW...not here, nor there...if there was no reserve would definitely be worth bidding on...my opinion only...once everything is said and done that $350 BIN will be $450 or thereabouts, and I don't think this one is in that class...

I agree. There are some cosmetic problems with it and by the time I purchase a hard drive, caddy, cover and battery the price will have gone up significantly. It does have free shipping with BIN though which isn't too bad. I'll keep an eye on it regardless. Thanks for the link.

A30p

#12 Post by scosgt1 » Mon Jul 30, 2007 1:29 pm

I have had and still have both. FWIW there is not much difference between them unless you are doing processor intensive tasks, such as video editing. Both will do a nice job of video capture and playback, and both will play many if not most 3D games.

They are identical units with the exception of the system board. Of course the A31p is faster, but the low end ones of 1.7 or 1.8 Ghz don't really exhibit much speed advantage. Mine is upped to 2.4Ghz. which is nice. but NOT in the same class as the new 2 Ghz Twhatever they call it this week.

I have several A30p units for sale, but can not do $200 so have not replied in that vein.
