Need Laptop for College Son

My guess is that he does not need the most powerful unit around, but I know that he will want to play some games...Wants DVD RW...I am a noob on this forum and have fallen behind the times in computer technology since I built my desktops. I would rather buy a computer from someone who has enough interest to join a forum than some reseller on Ebay.

TIA

Welcome to the forum!!

You might want to provide a price range, or else your're going to get overwhelmed with offers. Though, the dvd-rw spec might limit the offers...

Does it have to be a Thinkpad? If it doesn't, this $415 shipped laptop with a dual layer DVD burner seems like an excellent choice. That's even cheaper than many 4-year-old Thinkpad T40's.

I have a few Dell D600s --none with DVD-RW, though it's a simple modular drive like on ThinkPads and it uses the same d-bay drives as all current Dell Laptops do. Specs are 1.7 - 1.8GHz Dothan, 512-1GB of ram (two ram slots), wireless of some sort (Intel 2100, 2200, Broadcom, etc). Windows XP pro license on all of them, in varying condition from 'omg is that new?' (i.e. used in a docking station it's whole life, obviously never really used in a portable sense to 'yeah, that got used pretty heavily'. They're kinda T42-spec (twas a competitor), with 14" 1400x1050 screens, trackpoint (and of course touchpad), smart card reader, cardbus slot, IR, 2 USB 2.0 ports, parallel (and serial), 40-80GB fujitsu and toshiba hard drives, etc. new-ish (like under 1 full cycle) optical bay batteries available, totally still good main system batteries, etc.

p.s. just checked ebay, the dell OEM dvd-rw drive goes for around 75 shipped new: http://shop.ebay.com/__Drives-Storage_d ... 20dvdQ2drw

let me know if you are at all interested (I'm sure there isn't much interest because they are dells, but these aren't inspirons they're LATITUDES.. metal frame structure and LCD protection like thinkpads, etc) and I can take copious photographs of any ones that I have.
