FS: IBM T42p 2373-GUU NEAR MINT $750+SH/PU RTP/Durham NC
I was wonder how much I should expect for a near mint T42p with maxed out 2 GB Crucial memory? It is a 14.1" model (2373GUU) with an ATI Fire GL video card, no dead pixels, screen protector, a 100 RPM HD, 9 cell extended battery, Windows XP, no scratches or blemishes. It turned out to be an unused personal purchase, since I was advised to use my workplace machine for most matters.

You may (perhaps) get more feedback posting this question in the Marketplace rather than here. For recent T42p's set for sale there, check these threads:

Comparing the specs for an original 2373-GUU T42p (from here) against yours, I notice that you have swapped the HDD to a 100 GB model. Is this a 5400 rpm or a 7200 rpm?
Potential buyers of your T42p would probably also want to know if there is any remaining warranty?
Finally, you should perhaps indicate where in the World you are located (USA? Europe? Asia?), and to which parts of the World you accept shipping.
Best regards,
Johan

For a laptop in this price range, warranty is the key. My guess (if there's a year or less remaining) would be $700-750, since you're stating that the machine is in next to new condition.
Please let us know about this important issue, and update your location before Mods and Admins start reminding you of that...as they do have the authority to delete your posts if your present location is not added...although I guess that in your case they'd issue a few warnings, since you've been a member for a long time.
Bump for a great-sounding machine!

Thanks to Johan and ajkula66 for the helpful suggestions, and the forum admins for moving this post to the proper location.
To clarify the specifications of the T42p:
1. warranty - I looked up the warranty here:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... -WARNTY#sw
and it said "2007-07-03" with option to extend warranty here:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... PGD-WARNTY
2. location - I am located in Durham (RTP), NC, USA and will ship to U.S., Canada. European buyers will be considered if veterans like Bill Morrow can vouch for them.
3. hard drive - My original post is not clear. It is still the stock 60 GB 7200 RPM that came with the system, loaded with Windows XP. The 100 is from ATA-100 as indicated on the spec webpage:
http://www5.pc.ibm.com/us/products.nsf/ ... p/_2373GUU
4. screen and video card - A 14.1" 1400x1050 (no dead pixels) driven by ATI Mobility FIREGL T2 128 MB and GL drivers.
5. CPU and FSB - Intel® Pentium® M Processor 745 at 1.80GHz and in a 400MHz FSB. Runs cool and be used on your lap, i.e. laptop
6. condition - Near mint. As I said, it went unused and I used a screen protector. Even original "Intel Pentium M" and "Windows XP" stickers on the palm rest.
Please let me know if I can provide further information, photos, etc. For photos, admins may assist by indicating how and in what size to upload them.

More information for benefit of all in response to questions I have been receiving:
7. whole T42p vs. parts - I am inquiring about selling the whole T42p. It would break my heart to see such a good performing machine separated into parts. You can just buy it whole and then do not tell me what happens to it
8. included software - Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2 and Access IBM software with Think themes, icons, wallpapers. Access IBM software and blue button works and can restore to factory defaults. Other installed software some which are not part of these defaults includes Microsoft Office 2003 (Tools, Access, Excel, InfoPath, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, Word), ATI HYDRAVISION, IBM RecordNow!, InterVideo WinDVD, InterVideo WinDVD Creator, MacroMedia Dreamweaver, Sun Java NetBeans, Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional, Palm Desktop Software. I am told this hardware configuration is also well supported in Linux.
9. connectivity - Wired support includes Intel PRO/1000 MT Mobile Gigabit Ethernet and internal 56K modem with phone jack for dialup/fax. Wireless support includes Bluetooth, Atheros 802.11a/b/g, and Fast Infrared built in and working properly. Other connections include parallel port, VGA port, 2 PC card slots, 2 USB 2.0 ports, and S-Video out port, power port.
10. power - IBM 100-240V international AC adapter (made in China) and IBM 9 cell Li-Ion battery (made in Japan, cycle count is 9).
11. mouse - Has a ThinkPad UltraNav with TrackPoint, i.e. both touch pad and eraserhead pointers with five buttons for left, middle, and right clicks.
12. methods of payment - In order of preference, cash (if you are picking up locally), PayPal, check (ships when check clears). Not interested in bartering or trading.
13. shipping - Buyer's preference and cost for a TRACKABLE shipping method, e.g. Fedex, UPS, DHL. I will provide the shipping materials and pack it securely. You are also welcome to come by and pick it up personally; just message me for NC address and time.
14. price - $750 + your S/H preference. This is a loaded T42p upgraded with a 2nd GB memory stick from Crucial, not just stock, and not a T42. From the other forum listings it is the median price range for such a configuration and condition. I would rather sell it at a lower price to a thinkpads.com community member with peace of mind than take chances with Ebay.

Have not recieved advice about the forum etiquette for photos yet, so to respond to requests I posted an image using craigslist's posting capability at:
http://raleigh.craigslist.org/sys/395562326.html
If someone knows of a better image posting resource, please let me know.

Photos have been requested of this T42p, so what is the current forum etiquette in terms of number of photos, file sizes, locations to upload etc.
Thanks!

Amending "12. methods of payment" to:
12. methods of payment - In order of preference, cash in hand (if you are picking up locally), deposit cash into checking account (if elsewhere), checks either in hand or deposit into checking account (ships when funds clear), certified money order. Do not have enough experience, and thus confidence in PayPal. Not interested in bartering or trading.
Edited to explicitly clarify methods of payment, upon consultation with others in the forum.

You can host the images at places like Photobucket.com and imageshack.com, whichever you find easier.fox_napier wrote:Bill and other forum.thinkpads.com veterans,

I normally use links to my pics. I don't normally include them...however, if you decide to include them, we request that they be 50k or less, and change your title to include a warning that images are in the thread (ie. PICS, IMAGES, etc.), just so that those on dial up can decide whether or not to open the thread.
Good luck with your sale...

Thanks tfflivemb2! Your advice is better than my craigslist posting attempt, since now the original, uncropped and unreduced, photo can be seen at imageshack's imagehoop service here:

Your impression is not based on facts... see e.g. the ltwbook (aka "Personal Systems Reference Lenovo ThinkPad Notebooks 2005 to present - withdrawn August 2007 - Version 326") referenced to in the post of Sun Jan 28, 2007 in this thread. TheT42p announced for sale in the present thread is certainly a genuine T42p!synchromesh wrote:I was under the impression that all T42ps had 15in screens (at least mine and a few other I've seen all do). Much thanks Johan and ajkula66 for the clarifications and support! It is indeed a genuine IBM ThinkPad T42p, 2373-GUU, small enough to be portable, with enough power to be a mobile workstation.
Folks have indeed been interested and contacting me by PM or offline. I received an eager offer and check for the T42p and so respectfully turned others away. But the buyer then backed out the day before shipment, and I accommodated by giving him the choice a laptop or refund check. So, PLEASE read the ad completely before purchasing, i.e. "checks either in hand or deposit into checking account (ships when funds clear)." If you need it sooner, we can agree upon a method of payment that clears faster.
Alas, this means my original customers in the queue have found other options. The T42p is still available! I even encourage to visit me and try before you purchase it.
Edited for highlighting.

Thanks pianowizard for the suggestion.
It has been a disheartening experience to say the least, especially since my other sales experiences have went well. I was a responsible seller by reiterating the terms by phone call and confirming by emails. But, it became apparent that the buyer chose to operate by his own terms instead of those set forth for everyone in the ad and my phone calls.
Again, I will not ship until funds clear and I doubt others will as well. If you do not accept that, then please do not pressure to purchase it. I am more than happy to take funds that clear faster than check, and ship out the same day the funds clear.
pianowizard, I am not sure what posting the username of the backed out buyer on the thread mentioned below will achieve. He was a newly registered member and does not seem to have made any posts or engaged in any trading till engaging my posting.

No, I do not wish to get further receipt of profane phone and online messages from him. I just want to sell my T42p in peace. It is a difficult decision, but I will leave it at that and try to make a positive from an initial disappointment.

I believe part of the reason is that it's difficult to tell that there is anything even being sold from the title. I would suggest to the OP that he adjust the title to explicitly state that there is a laptop being sold. Also, it isn't until the seventh post that you actually see a price for the machine.rhema83 wrote:Seriously, WHY ISN'T THIS T42P SOLD??

It was a day from being shipped.
To share my saving graces and lessons learned for the future benefit of other sellers (and buyers) on this forum, stick to the terms of the ad, do not be pressured into uncertain circumstances, and document and confirm the transaction process by email/PM.
Perhaps fate had someone else in mind to give it a good home.
Let me know if more photos or videos are desirable.

OP here. Am I allowed to change the title of the post while the sale is going on? Will this confuse potential buyers who follow the post by its original title? Just wondering about this aspect of selling etiquette on this forum.
I agree that the title is somewhat vague, and that is a historical artifact of originally posting it as an inquiry in the "ThinkPad T4x Series" and having it moved to "Marketplace - Forum Members only" section and morphed into a sale item.

I would suggest to the OP that he adjust the title to explicitly state that there is a laptop being sold. Also, it isn't until the seventh post that you actually see a price for the machine.rhema83 wrote:Seriously, WHY ISN'T THIS T42P SOLD??
I am even considering upgrading from my T42 to this T42p!
Feel free to change the title of your post if you think it will help your sale. People can locate it quite easily if need be.

Thanks for the advice gator. How do I amend the post title to:
expect for on loaded T42p sale? near mint model 2373-GUU $750.00+$your S/H or pickup in Durham, NC
If I fill in the "Subject" line in the "Post a reply" does it not only change the title of the reply, and not the post?
