Re: reballing GPU.

What's your take on the T43 (& late T42) units where the ATI chip is tacked down at the factory with epoxy at the corners?

Can you fix these?
Although these don't fail nearly as often as the earlier motherboards, I've still had to fix a few. The epoxy isn't any problem, it comes off pretty easily when the board is heated.

Hi James,

I received my T42p yesterday. Great work, and thanks for having the patience going through the hassle of sending it to Finland :)

Much appreciated!

I'm a customer just popping in to highly recommend this service! James revived a dim R50p screen, and it was obvious that he worked carefully to get the job done right.

@ James, Have you considered to offer the service for polarizer replacement? That is another service with increasing demand.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad to hear that the R50p's still working well.

I actually haven't thought about it. Do you know of a place that sells new polarizers? I'd definitely consider it, the main question would be how much the polarizers would cost.

There is a site LCD parts:

... and one in Europe too --> TDComponents offering the Vikuiti films by 3M. I have no idea of how good (or bad?) these films are, and what they cost? Google...!

PS: It seems that gator has tried this 3M-film; see the thread Matte (yes!) LCD protection films from 3M.

I registered on these forums (finally) just to give this thread a bump. It's been hard to find anyone who can do CCFL replacement and general repairs right, let alone for such a good price. To all of you lurkers out there who aren't sure if you want to send your laptop to someone over the internet, I was in your position a couple of weeks ago and I'm glad I had James repair my T60p.

Nice to see you on the boards, Ivan. I appreciate the feedback!

@cmarti
About the polarizers, it seems that those products are meant to be applied on top of the existing layers of the screen. Is this what you meant, or were you talking about removing and replacing an existing layer?

Hello jamiphar,

I have
- several (I think 5) redish uxga displays (lcds only) for A31P, I should like to see repaired (as spare parts for our A31P's, the rest for resale), and
- I have two A31P systemboards that are reported by pc-doctor to have graphics problems (one graphics, one graphics and graphics-memory problems), and
- last but not least I have one board, where I have - lifting the security chip - reduced the board to beeping the problem.

Your prices are indicated on the website. Do You have any indication for the additional shipping costs?
Would You accept bare LCDs (UXGA/1600x1200, IPS) sent to You, as You - may be - have a A31P-Body to test them?
Would You accept bare LCDs, if accompanied by a bare A31P Body with a functional Board plus lcd-kabel?
Would You accept to repair A31P systemboards, if accompanied by a bare body, so You'ld eventually be able to test, using an external display?
Would You be able to and accept reviving the "tampered" board?

Is bundling possible?

Thanks in advance for taking the trouble looking at my questions...

PM sent, Friedrich!

As some of you might know, January 24th marked the one-year birthday of Arndt Computer Services. Our first year was exciting and very educational and we've been learning what it actually takes to run a successful business. I'm extremely happy with how many improvements we've been able to make to the entire workflow, though I'm sure there will be plenty more in the future!

As a special thanks to all our past, current, and future customers, we're taking 10% off the price of any repair! This discount will apply to any work order submitted from Jan. 26th to Feb. 2nd. The work order form can be found here: http://arndtcomputer.com/form.php.

As always, feel free to e-mail me directly at james@arndtcomputer.com.

Thanks for a great year!

Congratulations on a successful first year! I was one of your early customers with a R50p screen renewal. That machine is still bright and happy and is about to get Ubuntu installed on it.

Keep up the great work!

I just sent a reply, sorry for the delay! Your e-mail got a bit buried before I got a chance to reply (that's what happens if I fail to flag it right away).

Hey James,

I am an IBM Thinkpad A31 owner with an LCD issue. I'm told by a member on here it is a loose GPU problem.

Here is a link to my post: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=73112

Could you PM me about the possibility of fixing it? Thanks in advance

This is to post positive feedback for James and Arndt Computer Services, whom I contacted about possibly repairing my X60 tablet EasyServ mangled and Lenovo has been holding in Lenovo limbo at their offices in Morrisville, NC. Lenovo has recently become motivated enough to begin repairing my tablet, which experienced bezel separation from the SXGA+ LCD, so I may not need James' services at this point. However, his communication with me was prompt, courteous, and professional, and he even replied after 1 A.M. EST :o Even on a query about service that may need to be done, James' response was outstanding. If you have a ThinkPad in need of repair, don't hesitate to give him your business.

Thanks again for your time and help, James!

Cheers,
~tdr.

I was wondering if a new ccfl also fixes the "lower left/right shadows" that flexview displays are notorious for. I have one such display that's been nagging me for a while. It's not terrible but noticeable (lower right shadow about dime-sized, lower left , but I've heard that even brand-new-in-the-box panels from Lenovo have the issue. This is the main reason I haven't done anything about it until now.

@ carbon_unit

Thanks, Tim, I certainly appreciate the repeat business!

@Nameless

I know what you mean by the shadows. In most of the cases I've seen, the shadows are either gone or significantly reduced when a new backlight is installed. I've noticed than an old/weak backlight will often be darker at the end(s) than it is in the middle (thus causing darker corners), a new backlight fixes this by providing brighter and more even light. In some cases, like if shadows are caused by a ripple in the LCD layers, a new backlight probably wouldn't help too much.

I hope this helps!

I just wanted to give thanks to James for the excellent job he did changing the backlight of my T40P. The screen is now nice and bright. I can't remember the last time it looked this good. James did an excellent job taking care of my laptop. I wouldn't hesitate to use his services again. Thanks a lot James.

After a long break from being a presence on the forums, I'm very glad to say that we're once again able to offer these unique services to the thinkpads.com community. I have a couple of updates to announce about our services:

First of all, we now have our own in-house rework station and reballing equipment. This means a big improvement in repair turnaround times over our old procedure of outsourcing such work. By cutting out the middleman, you get quicker service and a more consistent result. This also means that we can offer custom chip-swapping services like GPU and CPU upgrades. The 1GHz 600X in my signature is a good example of this kind of modification.

While ThinkPads are our specialty, we can work on any brand of computer and we also offer a full range of other laptop and desktop repairs, along with software and remote-support services. More details, pricing, and contact info can be found on our website at www.arndtcomputer.com.

Just send me a message if you have any questions!
