Aw common, you just won a X41t on ebay for $550 shipped and charged us this much
If you can reduce the price down to about $580 I would gladly take it off your hand, as I only have this much budget to shop for a portable laptop for college.

How much he bought it for is irrelevant. What matters is the price and the specs now.
If someone recieved a laptop as a gift, you would not expect him to give it away for free would you ?

I can't speak for the seller, but I'd find it very difficult to consider an offer of $580 towards a machine with the asking price of $750 anything but another joke...and in a bad mood I'm sure I would be using a different term...

But then again, it's me...

Not everybody has tons of money to buy a laptop, especially a college student like me, who have to do work study to pay for tuition If he accepts my offer, great! If he doesn't, I'll have to look for another one. I'm just asking him to consider my offer, that's it. No reason to fuss about it.

I don't think that you've understood my point. There is nothing wrong with being on a budget-most of us are, for a variety of reasons.

However, there are ways of going about it. There are plenty of machines for sale on this forum within what you've stated as your price range. No need for lowballing a nice unit offered by a trusted forum member in extremely good standing. Your whole intro, joking or not, could be very easily seen as "thread-crapping" which is not really a welcomed contribution to this forum...

Please don't take this personally. I'd have the same reaction if it were anyone else. I understand that you're pretty new to the forum and that you may not be familiar with all the buying and selling practices that are common here. Don't take my words as criticism, but as a friendly advice.

Generally though, I'd suggest that the offering and negotiation take place privately. And I'd say it's common sense for all who buy and sell that in the interests of fair play, you do that enquiring in a private message. Experience has shown that when a query on a price or an offer lower than the asking price is made, the thread shoots off on a tangent, which I'm sure is not what the seller desires.

As for what PW has done in buying cheap and selling at a higher price, if I managed to snap up what I considered a bargain, and then onsell it for a higher price that I believed reflected its actual value, I'd by all means do that. The market will determine whether or not there's someone who agrees with my belief.

That X41t didn't come with a digitizer pen or the recovery partition or the recovery discs. I had to spend another $50 to get both.

The problem is I actually paid $601 on this machine, not $550 as that idiot claimed.

I need to sell this laptop before moving to NYC on Sep 29th. This guy's thread crapping might be preventing it from happening. I am paying a lot for rent (a nice bedroom in Manhattan for one month, go figure!) and need this money desperately. How can I not be upset?

Technically he has not thread crapped. He has not said the laptop is not worth 750. He has just made a lower offer.

I'm not very happy with the tone of this thread's discussion. Name-calling and arguing is not acceptable under any circumstance. Take that sort of behavior off-line immediately.

Having said that, messages in the Marketplace are no different than any other messages posted on thinkpads.com. If you post something, expect to get differing opinions, and be prepared to handle responses in a calm and civil manner. Negotiations and offers should be made privately and not in the public view.
