Testing waters for a sale of a nice T42P Laptop

#1 Post by altima0335se » Fri Sep 14, 2007 8:21 pm

I've been surfing these boards for a longtime and finally decided to post something. I'm thinking of parting with a T42P that I have model #2373-7XU. I'll throw the specs out there and everyone can tell me what they think. It has the 1.8ghz Dothan chipset, 2gb of pc2700 memory, 100gb 7200 rpm hd, the 128mb ATI FireGL T2, 15 inch UXGA(1600x1200) TFT LCD, a 6 cell and 9 cell batt, a docking station that has never been used, DVD burner slim style, and shows that it is still covered by warranty untill 2008-05-09. What would something like this be worth? I also have the original 80gb hd in a usb case as a removable storage that I could toss in.

Please let me know what everyone thinks :D

You can get a similarly spec'd machine without the extra 1GB RAM for $800 at IBM (refurb). I'd say with the warranty, if it is in absolutely mint condition, I'd list it for $850 in the marketplace forum and see what happens. I'd also remove the extra 1GB RAM, battery, dock, and hard drive from the deal and sell them separately. Find the original hard drive for the machine and install it with the preload. In other words, return the machine to specs and sell everything else.

Welcome to the board!

That seems to be one sensational machine! My personal recommendation would be that you sell the T42p with 1GB RAM, the 80GB drive and either battery, then sell the 100GB drive, docking station (is it a Port Replicator II, Mini Dock or Dock II - that'll help dictate how much you could sell it for) and the other battery separately.

The laptop itself...depending on pics to show the external condition, I reckon you could ask for at least $800-850. It has a nice chunk of warranty left and the lovely 15" Flexview. Add another $50-60 for the 1GB PC2700, the docking station and battery (depending on cycles), and you could get up to $900-950 for the lot.

Just my possibly misguided 1/50 dollar, but yours is a stellar machine and would command a price reflective of its prestige! :)

That's a Mini Dock - I'm looking for one of those, but have a couple of other options I'm exploring, plus shipping to Australia may not be as attractive an option for you. As a guide, they can be found on eBay for about $46 shipped in the US.

I'd pretty much second Harry's opinion on $850 in stock condition. If you're lucky, you're likely to walk away with $1000 or thereabouts with all the stuff that you have....

Posting a link to the pictures, as well as some references (eBay, heatware or whatever you have) would help as well in my modest opinion...

Good luck with the sale of a great sounding machine!

A few issues to consider and inform about...

#10 Post by Johan » Sat Sep 15, 2007 7:13 am

Sounds like a very fine system, so if you need more input before deciding whether or not to sell it (and if selling: Still looking for comments), here’s some:

Original specifications for the 2373-7XU are hereand don’t forget to emphasize that this unit has a 15" UXGA Flexview/IPS display!!

For those perhaps wondering why to get an used T42p (in stead of an e.g. brand new T61), I’d suggest to have a look in the thread Buying a 2nd hand T42p discussing why I’d personally recently bought a remanufactured T42p, and would do it again without hesitation today! :-)

Add a few words about its actual condition…
(cosmetically perfect or not?); are there any defects or known problems of any kind, are there any scratches or scuff anywhere, any parts broken off, any shiny keyboard and/or palmrest (and, by the way: Which keyboard: NMB?), any labels missing, Windows XP Prof COA still intact, any dead or stuck pixels (use the free program Dead Pixel Buddy to test this), battery condition (number of cycles on each battery, maximum remaining charge on each battery) etc. Photos always are a nice thing! :-)

Inform about to which parts of the World you accept shipping. If you consider international shipment (which will of course open up a much larger market!), you should notify potential international buyers that the 2373-series of T42’s are covered by IBM’s international warranty (see International warranty service (IWS)).

Warranty (coverage and extension) is an issue of interest for many forum-users, so as a free service :-) for potential buyers, here are a few links to threads in this forum discussing ThinkPad warranty and extension/upgrade thereof: Extending ThinkPad warranty and Extended warranties, buy now or later? and FS: T42p 15" Flexview (2373-KXU) and Warranty extension.

Update: With respect to pricing, I guess around $800-850 (depending upon the actual configuration) is a good starting point. If I were to sell this, I would offer the buyer the option of "configuring" the T42p with more or less of the RAM mentioned, and with a smaller or bigger HDD etc. - this would sort of be in line with the high quality of most sales taking place in this Marketplace, in my opinion. A hint about pricing: See todays offer for a similarly configured, used T42p on Lenovo site - here: IBM Certified Used Notebook T42p (HTU).

PS: Be sure to update the title of this thread if you put this T42p out for sale! (about how to do this; see rkawakami's post of Sun Sep 09, 2007 7:30 am in this thread.)

Good luck with the sale!

Best regards,

Johan
