Help on pricing a T21 with 0175/CRC1 as parts machine

#1 Post by meh » Mon Sep 24, 2007 10:57 pm

It's a T21 2647-9AU.

850 MHz PIII
256MB (2x128MB) RAM
DVD-ROM
SXGA+ LCD

Aside from the 0175/CRC1 error, there's only a few mostly cosmetic issues:

- Power adapter somewhat busted, tried stripping/resoldering cable. Didn't help, however, it is the power adapter because it works beautifully with a power adapter from a 365XD
- Minor pressure marks on screen
- Some scuffs/cracks, normal usage
- Battery is not properly calibrated (never found the time to properly do it)
- Battery is taped together (it was my curiosity asking whether there were 18650 cells in there, and yes, it is indeed 18650 Li-Ion cells inside. Don't quote me on that though, even though I'm fairly sure, I don't want anyone saying they blew up their laptop after replacing the cells inside the battery pack.)

I probably won't be selling until after this giant rummage sale held for fundraising near where I live, just to make sure nobody wants to sell a broken T2x that I could take the EEPROM from, but I just wanted to know a good asking price when/if I decided to sell it. Also, would it be better to sell whole or part it out?

Also, I think my power adapter killed it as I was running without a battery, and the connector on power adapter is flaky (move laptop, voila, no more power.) I probably moved it during boot... and... killed it.
It's my first ThinkPad, it died far too early (about two-three months of me using it)

I'm still wondering whether I should sell this or keep it for sentimental value or repair or repair and sell.

Here's some pictures of the thing.

Well lets see...
Bad system board
Bad LCD (pressure marks)
Bad AC adaptor

Hard drive (if any) is old

You are kidding, right? Maybe $25.00, and that is a stretch. You just don't have anything of value there, other than the RAM for a Win98 user.

Mmm.

Just to clarify, I'm not selling just yet, I guess I might want to fix it if that's all it would get me.

I have a T23 with a mobo problem for sale. It no longer powers up, but when it was still working, everything else was too.

If you want to check my reputation as a seller, search for "iamdmc918" on eBay.

Message me if you're interested.

Your T21 is worth way more than $25. scosgt1 usually underestimates the value of others' Thinkpads. If you sell the whole unit as a parts machine, you might get $80 to $100. If you part it out, you can get more:

SXGA+ LCD, at least $50
LCD cable, $10
inverter, $5
2x128MB sticks, $10
Hard drive caddy plus cover, $5 to $10
DVD-ROM drive, $10 to $15
Keyboard, $5 to $20 depending on condition
etc. etc.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)
Acer T272HUL; Crossover 404K; Dell 3008WFP, U2715H, U2711, P2416D; Monoprice 10734; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

I'm gonna have to agree with kwoon on this one, scosgt1 usually bashes prices and then turns around and sells the same thing with his own personal, ginormous markup.

That's what the Free Enterprise system is all about. If meh does the homework, a suitable price will be arrived at. Ignore the "low-ball" figures.

BTW, meh, you have a PM from me about this four hours ago.

And someone with FOUR (4) posts really KNOWS me and what he is talking about? How dare you?

scosgt1 does not sell junk or defective machines. He stated that the LCD has white blotches. NOT worth $50 to anyone with a brain. I bought a box of 10 HDD covers over 18 months ago 10 for $10.00
The system board is KAPUT. The AC adaptor is KAPUT.
Last week I bought two WORKING and almost complete T21's for $65.00 each
So how much can a totally non-working unit be worth?
If you want to give me $120 for a TOTALLY WORKING T21 I'll take it right now.

And I must say, many people on this site talk a big fight, then send PM's trying to nickle and dime me to death. Seems like sometimes I need to double the asking price so I can take 1/2 and satisfy the nitpickers. Obviously this does not apply to the many people with whom I have had successful transactions. But prices just ain't what they used to be. Some people here operate on the theory of talk high and offer low. Used machines need to be perfect to bring any kind of a big price, else just sell it for parts, which for T2X units are not expensive these days. How many DVD's and Floppy drives and CDRW/DVD's do you want?

Oh and Kwoon, thanks a lot for the DEFECTIVE T4X keyboard - the one with the completely torn off cable. I was not going to mention that, but you had to jump on the bandwagon.

End of rant, his T whatever is not worth $25.00
It is a paperweight.

For what it's worth I recently bought a T21 with a CRC1 error for $70 Shipped. The differences are as follows:

working battery & AC adapter
no optical drive or HDD (does have the caddy though)
XGA LCD
128MB
Extra motherboard that may work

I haven't received it yet so aside from a couple pictures I don't know it's exact cosmetic condition. I'd say you're better off parting the system out instead of selling it whole.

As far as the pressure marks on the LCD, they might be removeable. This is just a theory of mine. When I was replacing the backlight on my T23 my panel had a small mark where too much pressure was applied and created a ripple in the diffusion layer. When I had the panel apart I separated the diffusion layers and gently rubbed the spot where the distortion was. When I put the panel back together it was completely gone. I'm thinking that may work for pressure marks, but since I don't have a spare LCD to experiment on I can't be sure. In the pictures the pressure marks don't look too bad, however they're pictures and are only so "accurate." If anyone out there would like to donate a spare T2x series LCD so I can go all mad scientist on it shoot me a PM. :)

Wow, that was a long time ago. I tested each and every key of that keyboard before selling it, and disclosed in my ad that the only thing that didn't work was the right button of the touchpad. The cable could have been loosened during shipment. Why didn't you tell me when you received it? I just sent you a PM; let's discuss this further in PM if you want.

To nonny: I understand that you want us to take it outside, but I needed to write the above because if I didn't respond in public, some people might think I am trying to shun responsibility for that broken keyboard (and of course, we still don't know who was responsible, but if it really was my fault I would refund the $5 that he paid). I will not write another word about this matter in this thread and will communicate with scosgt1 via PM.
