No warranty. What would be a fair price for this in todays market?

$500 give or take a few bucks depending on the condition, and on whether you're buying or selling...

I was thinking lower, given these things are very very low. But I do not want to make my friend feel short changed.

depending on the cosmetics, I would give 400 shipped to NY. This is not necessarily the value, but I don't know what that would be. Personally, it is worth that much to me.
no disrespect intended of course

On Craigslist or eBay it might be worth more.

One thing that really kills the value is the 20GB drive. 60GB drives for the X40 series are becoming impossible to locate.

I'll keep that fact in mind. Is it that the X40 uses a non-standard sized drive? How do I look for one online on ebay? Is it not the XXmm size for typical laptops?

All X40 and X41 (including tablets) use a 1.8" drive, regular laptops use a 2.5". To make it worse, other laptops using 1.8" drives (Toshiba and a few others) use a ZIF connector, where IBM/Lenovo uses a standard PATA connector. This means that most 1.8" drives you find on eBay won't work, and that no newer, higher capacity or faster drives will likely ever be released.
To make it worse yet, flash adapters, while they can work, will never be recognized by an X41's BIOS as an original drive and will always give annoying errors on boot (can click through and use, but cannot kill the warning).
So, with any X4x you are essentially stuck with the drive it comes with, or if you are lucky you can find a 40GB on eBay or elsewhere. I've been looking for a 60GB for some time for my own X41, but thus far no luck.

Oh!.. Has this issue been rectified on the T6x Tablet series?

X2, X30 and X60 all use conventional 2.5" hard drives.
