I have about two too many ThinkPads, including a R52 which I really like. But....I'm wanting to reply and say your machine sure looks great. And your pictures are excellent and very high quality. Somebody will be pleased when they buy it!

Thanks for the comments gentlemen, it is appreciated. Brad, as far as a similar T-series model, that would be a T43. Internally they are very similar. They use the same LCD's, docks, batteries, keyboards, CPU's, RAM, optical drives, AC Adapters, on and on. The outer cases are different in that an R52 uses ABS plastic (very tough) for a shell. So, for someone looking for a T43 similarly equipped in mint condition, this would be a good (less expensive) alternative. A shopper would have a hard time finding a T43 (or similar R52 for that matter) in this condition/price range with almost 2 years warranty left on it.

So the top cover of the T4x made of a titanium composite I believe is the only real difference from your R52 with a tough ABS cover instead. The motherboards are probably the same. Your R52 uses DDR2 memory then I presume.

Is the base plastic the same?

Is the fit of the lid to the base the same as a T4x ? My R50p lid has a bit of an overhang, its also a bit thicker.

The T43 does have a Titanium lid. The plastic base would be the same material as an R52 as far as I know. It does use DDR2 RAM, PC2-4200. It will take PC2-5300 as a good substitute. The top lid does overhang the base by the thickness of it. You can see it in this pic -

… a question about the warranty on this ThinkPad: According to IBM’s specifications for this R52 model 1860-BUU it originally came with a XGA non-FlexView display (as also evident from the ltwbook). From your advertisement it appears that the R52 has been upgraded to a (beautiful!) Flexview/IPS display, which is – in my opinion – the best display available on ThinkPad’s. And for those potential buyers who might not know this: Flexview/IPS displays are no longer offered by IBM on any new ThinkPad’s – so this is one of the last chances to get one of these beauties!

If you however go to the IBM site: LCD service parts - ThinkPad R50e, R51e, R52 and check the rightmost column "CRU ID" you will see that it says "N" all over the place for all LCD parts. CRU means customer replaceable unit, and "N" obviously means "No". In other words, replacing or (in this case:) upgrading the display is not supposed to be done by the end-user.

So what I wonder about is this: Do you believe that IBM will still honor the warranty on this ThinkPad if it is being sent for repair, and they discover that a non-CRU modification has been made by the end-user? Or… is there a chance that IBM will claim that the warranty has been void owing to this?? The reason for asking is that I am currently thinking of upgrading a T42 also having a XGA display to a SXGA+ Flexview/IPS display, but I’d hate to void the remaining warranty on this T42.

Does anybody have experience with IBM’s warranty-policy in the above case?? Sorry if this is not the appropriate place to ask this; I don't mean to start a discussion about this issue, here.

Good luck with the sale – if I were looking for yet a ThinkPad it would inevitably have to be one with a FlexView display, and I’d certainly consider this offer as a rare bargain!

In reply, I'll simply quote the original owner; "The R52 warranty is IBM/Lenovo depot repair, valid through 8-11-2009. They certainly won't fix the LCD if it fails because this type of LCD wasn't even offered on R52's (I suppose their is a 1% chance they would cover it by mistake?!) The rest of it (other than the Bluetooth CDC) should be covered. Any kind of CRU item, like CD burner or wifi card, would be covered, of course."

The reason he mentions bluetooth is because that was a custom upgrade.

Guys, this has the flexview SXGA+ screen and also has the intel i915 chipset (533Mhz). This means that you can put in a pin-modded dothan cpu in there !!! You can buy a 400Mhz dothan cpu at 1.7Mhz (cheap), and after pin-modding it will run at 2.26Ghz (with a 90% success rate)

Ok, I'll tell you what I'll do. I am now a motivated seller since I bought another machine. Same price as above ($550 shipped) and you have your choice of (1) of the following (2) free upgrades;

This is a tough crowd . The LCD looks so nice lit up on this machine that it will make you cry. Did I mention it is very fast too? Come on guys and gals, you know you want this machine. It is calling your name ....

I just might...............I haven't convinced myself yet to buy this, now with a dvd burner!!
