what can be done with $500? i'm thinking of getting a 600X or another laptop with similar specs for <400, and then buy lots of ram and maybe a used CPU to boost it over 1.0
does this sound like a reasonable plan? am i completely in the wrong price range for my wants?
Thanks in advance!

Your starting price of $400 for a clean 600X is in the ballpark for an "as shipped" 450MHz or 500MHz, but the max upgrade is a PIII 850MHz. That's the fastest MMC-2 module Intel made.
$500 or a little more should get you a clean 650MHz machine with some additional RAM and a 20GB or so HD.

how about something like this
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 94358&rd=1
and then boost the ram to 512+?

Good deal, but 512MB is the max RAM on a T21.
I'd want to know if they were XGA or SXGA before I bought any.

1. please do not link, as a practice, to ebay ..
2. the T22 looks to be a fair deal.. get a guarantee on the display quality..
3. no warranty at all on these obviously off lease thinkpads.. so you have nothing if it dies within the first month.. and no warranty upgrade after factory warranty ends..

oops... sorry Bill.
what T-22 where you reffering to... did you mean the T-21?
Off lease is pretty much the only reasonable option for me... as my price is so limited... this won't be a forever laptop... just until i can save up 1,500 for a relatively good thinkpad.

hmmm... i'm thinking toward the R30, as it is $100 cheaper (just, for a ballpark range, looking at Buy It Now), and has very similar specs. Could get some nice upgrades with an extra $100 worth of goodies. Does it only take 133mhz ram? or is a faster ram compatible?

For T20~22, contact Len at
Contact@AbsoluteRaleigh.com He has about 30 of these (most still with warranties) that have just come off of lease. I've bought about 10 T22's from him over the last few months for my school and we've been very satisfied.

correct me if i'm wrong:
the t22 and t21 are older laptops, but were top of the line when they were new
the R30 is a much newer product, but is a "budget" computer

The T 20 series has Pentium 3 and I believe the R30 has a celeron. Correct me if I'm wrong. It's also bulkier. But anyway, it's whatever you want. Like I've said, we've had about 10 T22's at our work. They are great little work horses and not a bit of trouble. They are about 3 years old, off the shelf, so you're right that they're older. Getting harder to find with warranties still intact.
