Ok well i'm using this system now and while i don't really need to sell it or need the money i'm thinking of a possible upgrade so i'm trying to figure out what i can get for this system (in my SIG). Still has some warranty also.

IBM Thinkpad T42 - 2374-K5U

P M 735, 2.0GB RAM, 120GB 5400rpm HDD, 14.1 SXGA+(1400x1050) TFT LCD, 64MB ATI Radeon 9600, IBM A/B/G II(MPCI), Fingerprint Reader, 6c Li-Ion batt*, Win XP Pro

* 6 Cell has some usage but it's still just below the design capacity. Right now it's at 48.89Whrs which is more than some of the other 47.54 Design Capacity ones. This one is a Panasonic with a design capaicty of 51.83whrs.

Upgraded 512MB to 2.0GB DDR333 RAM
Upgraded 40GB to 120GB + 16GB Samsung SSD
Added - IBM Bluetooth III
Added - IBM Clearplate with Bluetooth

I also have:
UltraBay HD adapter [PATA]
UltraBay Slim Li-Pol Battery (Has some cycles but above "Designed Capacity" still)
Extra AC Adapter - use it as a spare or at 2 locations like i do.

So what do you guys think i should get for this puppy?

For those curious - the Samsung SSD gets a 5.1 in Vista's WEI scores. Which is close to the 5.3 the new Hitachi 7K200 (5.3) gets but only draws about .7w while the Hitachi pulls 3.2w! It idles at .2watts i think. The hitachi is 1.7 or something. So talk about battery life :)

With just the SSD and the UltraBay Battery you can probably get 5-8hrs no problem.

EDIT- Actually it's 5.3 now after i did a refresh of the scores.

Whats the performance of the SSD compared to a 7200 rpm HDD?

SHoTTa35:

Not attempting to make this into a discussion, but before you sell this T42 (if you choose to!), would you perhaps be kind to provide some sort of "final feedback" in the thread Replacement of hard drive with SSD, where I believe you got the 16 GB SSD mentioned here?

It would be very useful to hear if you could compare the performance of the SSD to an ordinary, fast 2.5" 7200 rpm HDD. Not necessarily "technical numbers" such as access times etc, but more some sort of "human overall impression"; how does the SSD work and perform (speed, noise etc.) , compared to a standard 7200 rpm HDD?

Thanks in advance, and good luck with this sale... if etc. :thumbs-UP:

Best regards,

Johan

Well i've been trying to write a "review" of sorts and yeah it kinda got backlogged with everything else that's been going on but let's just say this;

It's so freaking fast that i wont even think of 7200RPM drives anymore :)

When i eventually upgrade my system to a Thinkpad with SATA drives i'm hoping the prices of of a 32-64GB SATA SSD will be down enough that i can buy one and just use that. The SSD in my opinion just makes things fly especially when i was using 1GB of RAM. It's definitely a plus then because i guess Vista uses the pagefile more so it makes the system feel like 2GBs i have now. i installed Vista SP1 Beta on a Hitachi 80GB 5400RPM drive that i might sell also with 2GB and the system felt about the same as the SSD with 1GB. The SSD and 2GB tho makes it feel even faster. Oh and yeah, we're talking about Vista here that's supposedly so sluggish even with 2GB of RAM. Some say you need 4GB for Vista to run great (not that i think so)

I did do some data tests with HDTach and while they aren't stellar (remember this is a PATA machine) they did get an average read of 50MB/s. Compare that to a Hitachi 7K100 that starts off at 46MB/s reads and drops down to 26.3MB/s with an average of 38.1MB/s. The Hitachi had higher "burst" performance (more than likely because this drive is a UDMA-66/ATA-4 drive instead of UDMA-133/ATA-6 but still tho, did some good numbers.

Check it out.

I am curious..

Hello first post here. I am really only interested in the drive because I was going to hold out for a 15". But how much are you after for either the package or the SSD drive? Will you ship to New Zealand?
Thanks in advance for your reply.

I'm not the one to ask for guidance in pricing a T42, but depending on the final selling price, I would be interested in this. I'm liking sxga+ and uxga screen resolutions.......

I'll be watching this one.

Ron

EDIT: I wont be watching this, I picked up a nice T42 on Ebay.

SHoTTa35 thanks for the reply and sorry for the delay--things are very topsy turvy around here right now. Regarding a price for the SSD, I don't want to speculate on how much it's worth. If you could let me know how much you want for it that would be great. Thanks

Well i wasn't sure what to price it at and was just kinda hoping to sell it with the system but eitherway this is the first place i found that had it:

http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/info_6268.html

165.00 British pounds sterling = 338.61 US dollars
165.00 British pounds sterling = 441.87 New Zealand dollars
Exchange rate: 2.052200
Rate valid as of: 31/10/2007

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820609234
Super Talent 32GB SATA version

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820208317
Transcend 32GB version for $299.99 but the WRITE speeds are 8MB/s so yeah you can buy that but it will suck more than an regular HDD.

The read speeds on my drive is 55MB/s and the write speeds are at like 30-40MB/s i think.

@ SHoTTa35:

I am very interested in the SSD - for making my T42p even more silent than what it already is. I am willing to pay what you paid for it yourself, plus of course any expenses with respect to payment fees, shipping etc.

Thank you in advance.

Best regards,

Johan
