WTB: Desktop AMD 64 cpu...

#1 Post by SaberX » Tue Nov 27, 2007 8:12 pm

I'm new to the AMD side of computers.I have always had Intel CPU's.

I was just given a Asus A8V-deluxe wifi-g motherboard.
From what i can see it's a Socket 939 board.
And a google serch says it should take Athlon 64FX's , Athlon 64 , and Athlon 64 X2 CPU's.
The Asus web site just has the A8V board listed(not the deluxe) i'm guessing it's the same board.

I'm looking for the cheapest CPU i can get just to get the board up and running.
Anyone have anything for cheap?

You can use anything from an Athlon 64 3500+, to a dual-core Opteron 185.

I'd recommend the Opterons, as they have twice the cache and are generally very overclockable (extra stable because they're server processors). I'm running a single-core 1.8ghz Opteron 144 OC'ed to 2.77ghz right now in my desktop. :)
