NEED: A Quality 802.11g Router (sell or suggest one please)

#1 Post by brainpicker » Sun Dec 09, 2007 6:59 pm

My router died... again. I only have a new Linksys WAP54G wireless access point and a new Netgear Travel Router in my "room from hell" (though I have some wired routers too). I'll use one for a while if needed, but if anyone has something they can't use I'd be glad to buy or trade something for it. I'm also open for suggestions of which to buy retail if needed. I don't need or want n-capability.

Thanks,
-Yak

I picked up a refurbished Netgear WGT624 at TigerDirect for $24.99 a couple weeks ago:

I currently have it configured as a wireless access point in my WPA encrypted home network. No problems yet.

I have D-Link DGL-4300 for sale. This router is considered one of the best out there. I'm asking $70 + shipping. Let me know if you're interested.

That's the one I have. It's been running for 4 years I think.

Thanks for the responses. The WRT54G's are cheap and I can pick one up at the local big box to set up today so I'll go that route. I'll conside this thread closed now, but if any of you WRT54G users have experience with the 3rd party firmwares that would allow for me to increase the output power I'd appreciate an e-mail about your experiences and recommendations.

Thanks,
- Yak

I have three WRT54G routers in my house. I've run the Linksys, DD-WRT and Sveasoft firmwares, bonded in a WDS network, and I've found that DD-WRT seems to have the best combination of flexibility and reliability. I need to reset the Sveasoft firmware every couple of months when it stops handing out IP addresses, but the DD-WRT has been rock solid for me.
Apathy is on the rise, but nobody seems to care.

Is stock WRT54G firmware stable on WPA2?

I also have a WRT54G v3.0 and am running Tomato firmware on it. Top class!

I think for the newer versions (v5.0 and later) you have to go with a WRT54GL because those are the ones with Linux.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WRT54G

I'll also vouch for the Linksys WRT54GL. I am running DD-WRT on mine and it's great. Never needs to be reset and never drops the connection.
