WTB: Memory for my Thinkpad T42

#1 Post by dilip » Tue Dec 18, 2007 3:07 am

I have a 1GB (2 x 512MB) 2373K5U (T42 2373) Thinkpad, and would love to upgrade it to 2GB (and could then offer the 512MB modules here, if there is need/interest). I think I need:

(2) 1GB, 200-pin SODIMM, DDR PC2700

and see that Crucial offers the modules for $92 each, Kingston for $104, and newegg (newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145068) seems to offer the Crucial module for $71 each.

Any suggestions on other sources? Any for sale by forum members? Thanks.

FYI, Kahlon (www.kahlon.com) has that part for $69 each and 18004memory.com has their no-name part for $59.

Crucial 1 GB PC2700 (Crusial P/N CT12864X335) can be found for $60 after Google Checkout rebate at BUY.com. According to the thread pc3200 (200 mhz DDR) in T42, possible? you may also use PC3200 in T42's, which might be possible to find cheaper than PC2700.

According to a thread yesterday in the "Slickdeals" site --> this Crucial 1 GB PC2700 should have been around for as low as $35 (!!) at FRY.com, but I can't find that offer today?

I use Crucial in several T42's and never had any issues with it - and hence I recommend it!

Thanks! I'm buying from buy.com and taking advantage of $20 off by using a new "revolution card".

I don't know the current low price off top of my head but with the closing of Compusa you may want to check at a store near you. A few months ago I picked up a 1 gig stick for $59.
I understand that they may not start advertising the going out of business thing until after Xmas but that would be a good local place to check out.

And if you have one located near you, check out Circuit City, they have the PNY Optima 1GB PC2700 DDR notebook ram going for $54. Just picked up one myself to upgrade a T42p to 2GB, works great!

Mobil1, not sure what gig you started from, but did you really notice any difference going with 2 gig.....For the longest I was using just 512 and when I upgraded to 1 gig it was a big noticeable difference in performance. Now with the price of ram continually dropping I was wondering if 1 to 2 was that big a deal.

fkelly: My T42p came with 1 GB installed. It's currently running Vista Business and there was almost an immediate, noticeable improvement in overall performance when I upgraded to 2 GB.
