WTB: T42p 14.1" or 15" in the UK

Hi,

This is my first post to the TPs.com site, hopefully I've understood the marketplace nomenclature correctly!

For my girlfriend I'm looking to buy used T42p with either a 14.1" or 15" screen.

Ideally I'm looking for the 1.8GHz, though will consider the 2.0 if that's an option.

I'm not sure how many British people are selling, so initially just UK sales, though I may consider purchasing from the US.

best wishes for the new year
thinkpads.com is an excellent resource that I've just discovered

Welcome to the forum, Alasdair!

And, no, you haven't misunderstood anything (about posting here, so far!).

I suggest you look at the thread: WTS: IBM Thinkpad T42p SXGA+ 14" 2Ghz 1GB 60GB 2373KTU which was posted today: A T42p for sale, althought residing in Singapore (but available for worldwide shipping). For your information, there are really few T42p's being sold in the Europe; probably (in my belief!) because they were so expensive once they were sold here, that only relatively few of them were actually sold. Another T42p is also currently for sale here, as seen in the thread FS: Thinkpad T42p with Flexview but this one has run out of warranty... and therefore is cheaper (although being "better"; being a 15" UXGA FlexView/IPS!). Furthermore, see the add at FS: T42P UXGA - still under warranty, also FlexView, fair price (I actually really wonder why it has not been sold long ago??).

If you Search for "T42p" (and restrict your search to this Marketplace) you will get an impression about the recent T42p selling-prices. Many tend to rather wanting to "do business" here with trustworthy, honest, long-time ThinkPad-addicts and true enthusiasts, who know what they sell (and who know the condition of items sold!) compared to taking the chance on eBay - although prices there are often a bit less.

Have a look in the thread Would you say that a used T42P is reliable? which address a problem with reliability, which some T40/T41/T42 (incl. the "p"-models) are troubled by - many threads about that in the T4x-forum, incl. the "sticky": T42 shuts down when i move it.

Good luck!

Best regards,

Johan

Hi Johan,

Thanks for the warm welcome!

I'm aware of the flexing / GPU issues, and currently that is the biggest blocker in my mind. I was gutted to read about the issues because TPs are highly cherished in this house and also I couldn't realistically afford to repair / replace the board if problems did appear.

Other than this site I've been looking on eBay, and you're right the T42p is impossible to find in Europe at the moment. T42s sell for around £270 with 1gb Ram, 40GB hdds, combo drives.

We're more than happy to pay more for the T42p as discrete GPUs are a must for the work planned for this machine, however the flexing/freezing issue would really upset us and negotiating a resolution across the atlantic may be trickier.

I have a friend travelling to the States in February so that may be useful in avoiding the big delivery cost / import duty.

I'm going to give those threads a good read through and try and weigh up the options.

Is the flexing issue fairly easy to replicate, and so could I rely on the fact that this is not mentioned in any of the T42p forsale posts?

best,
Alasdair
