Hi all,
I'm on the verge of selling my lovely T40 to "expand my computing horizons" so to speak. But before I do, I'd like to know A) just how much I can get for it, and B) if anyone is interested. I've spent the past few months putting upgrades in it, and right now it it quite a formidable machine. It has a few "problems" here and there, but nothing that affects the functionality of it.

Current specs:

1.7GHz/2MB cache Dothan, with a month old long fan on it. No icky fan noise.

Two 1GB sticks of PC2700 RAM, both sticks are the same brand and have lifetime warranties.

Original motherboard with Radeon 7500. Does not have the GPU problem that mant T4xs suffer from. Very stable, has never crashed on BSOD'd/Kernel panicked on me.

Very nice SXGA+ LCD from a T41p. This is the only area of the entire machine where there are "issues". The most noticeable is that the screw covers for the three screws on either side of the screen, and the two for the top (next to the thinklight) are not there. The three for the bottom of the screen are there. This is merely cosmetic and you can get new covers just about anywhere, for very cheap. The other issue with the screen is that in the lower right quadrant of the screen there is a small mark. Most if the people I've asked about this refer to it as an "age mark" and say it's inevitable on many screens. After actually using the the machine for a while, you don't even notice it anymore.

Brand new Hitachi 100GB 7200RPM HDD, model #HTE721010G9AT00. This thing has a warranty until January 2012, and is very quiet and fast.

Ultrabay Slim HDD carrier with 60GB 5400 RPM hitachi travelstar HDD, with a warranty until February 2009. (no, not my old 60GB 7200, I need that ;) )

(note: warranties checked on Hiatchi's Warranty/RMA page, so they are correct.)

Ultrabay Slim CD-RW/DVD-ROM. FRU 13N6769. No problems. Reads and writes CDs just fine, and reads DVD's with no problems. Haven't tried any CD-RWs, but I have no reason to think they wouldn't work. This drive is very new, I purchased it a month and a half ago and it came in an IBM-Sealed antistatic bag.

Keyboard - Normal wear for a laptop of this age, but not nearly as bad as I have seen. The trackpoint is the one with the little bumps on it, and is hardly worn at all.

Palmwrest/ultranav - No problems, looks nice, little or no wear on the trackpad buttons, trackpad still has a nice texture.

Battery - decent. Lasts one to one and a half hours, down to 45% wear, not bad considering it's the original. Since other people use laptops differently than I do, I can't guarantee that you'll get 1-1.5 hours.

Misc - Ethernet is 10/100, wifi is the atheros a/b/g, no problems. Both cardbus slots/ejectors work, USB does not have the "drops to 1.1" problem, works at full USB2 speed. speakers/mic/audio jacks are all fine, thinklight works. BIOS is fully updated. Power supply is the 16v/4.5amp version, with the IBM logo. No modem/bt card is installed, but I have a 56k modem around for it. If you want it I'll go through my parts and put it in.

Here's a CPU-Z generated page for this machine - http://dectop.nfshost.com/cpuz.htm

Pictures - http://picasaweb.google.com/john8520/T40Pictures
(note: I took these at a rather dark time of day, so I had to use the flash, which causes every singly spec of dust to light up, this making the case look terrible. In person the machine does not look anywhere near that dusty, or really dusty at all.)

What's included: T40, Power supply, CD Drive, HDD & Caddy, spare palmwrest/trackpad, spare keyboard (worn, but hey, spare parts are nice), and a no doa warranty. Will ship in one of those nice fedex laptop shipping boxes, via ups insured ground.

Thoughts on price? Would kinda like to sell it within the next few weeks.

Feel free to PM or AIM me, I respond quicker via AIM.

John

Product: ThinkPad T40 2374-14U [change]
Operating system: All [change]

Original description: P M 1.3GHz, 256MB RAM, 30GB 4200rpm HDD, 14.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 32MB ATI Radeon 7500, 24x-8x DVD(slim), Modem(CDC), Ethernet(LOM), Wireless upgradeable, Secure Chip(TCPA), UltraNav, 6 cell battery, WinXP Pro

My advice would be to get the machine as close to the original configuration as possible then sell every extra accessory and part seperately. 2x1GB PC2700 alone is worth $120 or so. Ask $300 to $350 for the base machine. Even if you have to buy a 256MB or 512MB stick of PC2700 you'll be way ahead of the game. Leave the larger processor and the CDRW in there if you don't have the originals. Put the 60GB hard drive in the machine and sell the 7K100 Hitachi...to me :).

Harry's right in terms of the configuration (as to whether you should sell the drive to him, well, some may beg to differ :P ), but in its current configuration, it is almost a T42 in a T40 body. I'd say that $450 would be a reasonable starting point, but you could make a bit more on the sale by doing what Harry suggested.

Good luck :)

Harry is correct. The situation is that the sum of the parts are worth far more than the whole. Your up against sub-$500 T60's on eBay with remaining warranty - just look at today's finished auctions, here's an example -> http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0218955612

You'll net over $500 by selling a slightly lower-spec'd T40 and the memory and large drive separately.

The beauty of your work and the result are not reflected by the current market value. Enjoy it or chop it up!

Isn't that drive supposed to be used in blade servers?

Good catch Carlos, yes it is.

Does that mean it should not be used in laptops? It works well in mine, quiet and fast. :)

I agree with Harry and Ed, part it out and you'll get more out of it, definitely...

And this HDD will work in laptops, but has not been designed for them and has a higher failure rate...

hmm, on the one hand, I might be interested in this machine for about the $400-450 range, saving you having to take it apart and sell the pieces, but the T60s are coming off lease in buckets, and the sub-500 link mentioned above, can be closer to $400 (delivered!) if you buy 2 -

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0193530217

Now, why would anyone buy 2?? I dunno, except that my current TP inventory includes an old T20, T40 and X40.... and I just joined the list because I was looking for another!! Now I'm thinking maybe 2 more would be nice????

If you do decide to part it out, do keep a complete working machine to sell as a lot of folks don't want to fiddle with missing drives and such (and you could always take a sharpie to color the screw heads to make them less noticeable<g>)

If you want to contact me, use email, as I'm often at different machines and may not have a pm client up.

Nope, $750 + $35 S&H was for each of the two T60's. Look at the buyers history: the same guy made two purchases.

The guy selling the TWO T60s

NO EBay !

For my money, I would rather spend a few extra bucks and get some protections. Send this guy a check or M.O.
He does NOT take EBay. This does not sound good to me.

If the deal sounds to good.......... well you know the rest.

My 2 cents

Hmm, well, I've been wrong plenty of times, but unless this guy is buying and selling to himself, he has plenty of positive feedback from real-looking ebayers. Personally, I'm expecting to pay less if I can't use paypal

Odd that the wording seemed pretty clear that this auction was for both "-- This is a lot item. HIGH BIDDER TO GET TWO LAPTOPS AS DESCRIBED BELOW.--" ... a bit misleading if it was a price per item rather than for the lot. Oh, well, I didn't get the T60s but I did pick up another refurbished T40 to play with for about $290 shipped, so I'm set for now.

Happy thinkpadding!
