FS: Asus EEE PC 4G Pearl White w/ mini-PCIe slot + 4GB SDHC

#1 Post by syedj » Fri Feb 15, 2008 9:52 pm

Up for sale is the well sought after Asus EEE PC 4G model in white pearl color. This is the rare model with an extra free mini-PCIe slot ready for either bigger flash memory, an EVDO or HSPDA card. The recent models are not coming with this extra slot anymore and hence limiting the expansion possibilities down the road.

In my experience of using it for about 2.5 weeks, I have found it to be extremely robust mini-laptop in all respects and nothing but a pleasant surprise. The default OS of modified Xandros Linux distribution is extremely easy to use, even in the expert mode with KDE windows manager. I have successfully edited MS Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and used it as an ultra-portable email and web surfing machine. It picks up 802.11b/g wireless all through the neighborhood and public WiFi locations. It automatically mounts USB DVDRW drive, external hard drives in USB enclosures - both PATA and SATA flavors - and USB flash drives without ANY problems. I have used an external IBM/Lenovo USB keyboard with integrated trackpoint and ultranav and three different mice without any problems. I even installed and experimented with Windows XP Pro on it with beyond expectations performance (Windows compatible drivers are included in the R&R disc). Despite the 900MHz Celeron processor (underclocked to 630MHz by default to conserve power) it handles all the tasks very well. Opening multiple Mozilla Firefox windows with multiple tabs each doesn't bog down the system even with the provided 512MB of DDR2-667MHz RAM. Yes, cold booting and shutting down in under 15 second is indeed correct for both Windows XP Pro and the default Xandros OS. The small keyboard takes a little getting used to but nothing that can't be handled. Because of its compact design it does slow down the typing speed a little bit though. It’s LIGHT, hardly noticeable in a backpack even with all the rest of the stuff taken out of the bag.

So, after all this raving review why am I selling it? I have dyslexia and the small screen is not boding well with it. I can't seem to remember what I was doing without having to switch in between windows or scrolling up and down constantly. On bigger screens (even the 12” XGA on an X31 that I am using right now) that’s not a problem when more text is simultaneously visible but the 7” display on the EEE PC is amplifying this disorder and at times proving to be counter productive for me.

Machine comes with blank warranty card and all the original contents of the box (along with the box). I had purchased a 4GB SDHC flash card that I will include in the sale as well.

Pictures available upon request.

$385 non-CC paypal/money order/personal check plus actual shipping to CONUS, Canada and Europe.

Edit #0: This is the non-Surf model with built-in 0.3 megapixel up to 640×480 up to 30 fps camera, socketed upgradeable to 2GB RAM and 4-cell, Li-Ion 5200mAh with 3h 30min estimated battery life.

Syed is a highly recommended seller. I have bought three (or four?) laptops from Syed.

Either way, my 12" X60 will server me just fine. . . Otherwise I might have been interested. Syed, you have got my mail if you want to make me a special offer :P

I played around with one for a week or 2 last month - they're not too bad but take some getting used to. The touch quality's very acceptable, but if you have larger hands, you will find yourself correcting mistakes and mistyped letters/numbers.

To back up what syedj has said, I found the EEE to be surprisingly competent at most computing tasks. It works well when XP Pro is installed, and if you can cope with the low resolution (which I sort of couldn't), it would make a good travel companion. It had to make way for the IBM/Lenovo purchases I've made since then, but it was still a good experience.

First and last bump before it goes to eBay.
