Thanks!
Just purchased one for my T40. 512MB isn't cutting it.

is there going to be a performance difference between matching crucial sticks and one ibm and one crucial?

Thanks Johan!
Just placed my order with Newegg!
Note the rebate is not valid outside the US, sorry!

This is an excellent deal! Thank God I sold a used 1GB PC2700 locally for $50 last week!

I ordered it yesterday at 8:30AM and it was at my doorstep 9:30AM this morning...It's nice when they ship it from nearby.
My only issue is the rebate. Naturally, you have to include the UPC from the "packaging," but the RAM comes only wrapped in an anti-static bag. The bag does have a bar code and product info on it, but I get the feeling Crucial will say "Sorry, that's not the correct UPC."

I also ordered it yesterday and it was delivered this afternoon, but I have not seen the package yet. Since the rebate is specific to Newegg, do you think Crucial will honor the rebate with the bar code from the anti-stat bag knowing that's how it was shipped out?
I think your delivery was from the same warehouse...that's one reason I like Newegg, free standard shipping is better than paid overnight delivery

I think it came from Edison, NJ...close enough to both of us for next day delivery!
I mean, the rebate says Crucial at the top, but it mentions Newegg.com as the "Qualifying Retailer." I was going to CALL Newegg, but the refund section online only lets you send an email (I'll be waiting 3 weeks to hear back from them).
I'll probably just put a note in with it that the only packaging with the RAM is an anti-static bag with barcodes on it. It's only $10, but still...I've heard so many bad things about rebates and newegg. Hopefully they have humans opening and processing the envelopes, and not aardvarks, like other companies I've dealt with. Weirdos.

So I pulled the memory out of the anti-stat bag and it tested fine. The bag itself has the Crucial part number and the serial number so I think it should be okay for the rebate

A little OT: I put the purchase from newegg off for a couple of days. I do have to mention this though:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0204117450
$41.87 (shipped, no rebate required) for a 1GB PC2700 SODIMM but I have to wait a couple of days before I get it and then worry about if it's going to work or not. If it doesn't then I'll complain loudly to the factory (which just so happens to be my employer

). I absolutely
hate having to buy this stuff!!!

'Cuz that one was a dud (so far). I knew it had the disclaimer "used untested as is unit" so that's why I only bid about $16. There's a broken connection or a bad part on the module as the four upper bits are bad only at certain addresses. I'll probably get around to trying a reflow and see what happens. It passes POST (no surprise), but fails memtest86+ and our benchtop tester at work.

I have faith in you Ray...I'll bet you can fix it!

I swear, each upgrade I do on this T40 makes it
slower. Upgraded from 1.3 Banias to 1.6 Dothan. Feels slower. Laggy.
Upgrade from 512MB to 1280MB. Slower.
I wonder if the 256MB stick under the keyboard is PC2100. Would that be a problem running with the PC2700 1GB stick? I know the one I pulled off the bottom (256MB) is PC2700, I just didn't want to remove the keyboard since sometimes the trackpoint stops working if it's not seated in some special way.

Dan,
T40 uses PC2100 memory. PC2700 will run at the PC2100 speed, though I really haven't noticed a perceived difference. And the part about not removing the keyboard is interesting. It's never happened to me and I've removed numerous keyboards.....
Good luck in your speed quest!!!!!!!!!

Thanks, Ron.
I knew it couldn't run at the higher speed, but wasn't sure if it was a conflict running one PC2100 and one PC2700, vs both PC2700. I guess I'll just open this poor machine up. I gave my T23 to my fiancee to use, and [censored] it, it feels faster.
Are you trying to say my keyboard removal skills are sub-par? Are you threatening me??

Dan,
This may sound silly, but did you defrag your drive? And for that matter, do you know what speed the HD is? If you have a spare drive, it might be worth testing by replacing your current drive with the spare and reloading the OS.
Good Luck!

It's actually a 5400RPM Seagate, and I defrag about every 2 weeks. Even though I've heard excessive defrags can slow it down...
I'm running the factory install of XP...I never had it so slow when I would run my own XP disc and then install the drivers, but it really shouldn't make a difference!
I've thought about reinstalling XP, but I just don't feel like it! Even though I hardly have anything on there, everything is configured just the way I like it. I could have it set up that way 10 minutes after the install finished, I'm just too busy and lazy.

I hear ya! I feel the same way about doing reinstalls (only when I have to!) and I keep saying that I'm going to create an image of a brand new set up that's customized so I don't have to go through all those darn install programs.
Anyway, it looks like you're on top of it but remember...google is your friend and I'm sure there are plenty of people who have the same issues and nuggets of suggestions that may be the key to your speed issues.

Shouldn't this post have gone in the "deal of the week" thread??
I'm just trying to revive the post as no good deals posted in there since December.

Hopefully someone has there eyes peeled
