I know , I Know it's a Dell Latitude laptop and not a Thinkpad.
But i have two thinkpads and just got a great deal on this Dell that i could not turn it away.
9 months old Dell Latitude D820
C2D 1.83Ghz(T5600)
1gig ram
100gig/7200rpm
256 meg Nvidia(not shared)
dvd-rw
Very nice laptop,for being a Dell.The Latitude's are very close to the Thinkpads.
Anyway.
I'm looking for the recovery cd's for it.
It has the Windows XP Pro OEM# on bottom.

It still has 2 full years warrenty left on it.I called Dell to see if i could get a set but they wouldent do it.

I can upload the ISO image of a Windows XP Pro CD for you. It should work with your COA key. Interested?

If your computers is still covered by the warranty then you should have been able to get a Windows CD shipped out to you. Based on what you wrote it sounds like you have not completed the transfer of ownership for the system yet. If that is the case that could be why the technician said he was not able to send you a replacement CD.

If you haven't done so, I definitely recommend filling out the transfer of ownership form, as it ensures you get the full benefits of the system warranty. If you have any questions about the form I will be happy to help out in any way I can.

Once the transfer is complete there should be no problems getting a replacement CD shipped out to you. If you are planning to do a clean reinstallation of Windows, you can get the latest Dell drivers from the support website (http://support.dell.com). The list of drivers, and the order they should be installed in, for the Latitude D820 are:

* Dell™ Notebook System Software
* Intel® Mobile Chipset Driver
* Intel 945GM/945PM Video Controller (Integrated video) or NVIDIA® Quadro® NVS 110M/120M Video Controller (optional video card)
* O2Micro® Cardbus/Smart Card Controller
* Biometric Reader (if applicable)
* Broadcom® NetXtreme™ 57xx Gigabit Integrated Network Controller
* Dell or Intel Wireless driver (if applicable)
* SigmaTel® STAC 9200 Audio Driver
* MDC (modem) driver
* Alps® Touch Pad Driver
* Bluetooth® driver and stack
* any other software/drivers specific to your system

If you have any questions for me I will be more than happy to answer them.

Thanks for the info Larry.
But i have a problem...
I'm the 3rd owner of the system.I bought it from a good friend of mine.
He bought it from the first owner when the laptop was only 6 months old.My friend bought it (i even remember him buying it) He did get all the info of the first owner. But he never did do the transfew of ownership into his name.I dont know why ,i just know he dident.He just bought the 6 month old laptop and used it.

So when i bought it last week it's almost 1 year old.
My friend was thinking there was only one year warrenty on it.
So i get the laptop and get the service tag and look up the warrenty , theres still 2 full years left on it.
So i ask my friend if he has the info with the first owners info on it.But he cant find it and has no way of getting hold of the first owner.
I looked at doing the transfew of ownership into my name BUT Dell's web site need to have the first owners name and e-mail.

So on my end theres no way i can get that info.
So i have a dell laptop with two years warrenty on it that i can use because it's not in my name.

Yes thank you.
I have been trying all day to download it.I'm at 13 times so far.
It gets about 20~25% and stopes.The internet is still fine.Just the down load stops.Last time when it got to 25% and stoped i left it there for 1/2 hr and dident move.
I'm going to try it on my friends computer.

EDIT: Got the full download now.
Thanks again

I did some double checking and, unfortunately, without having that information for the currently listed owner we are not able to do the ownership change through the automated process on the Dell site. Obviously, for privacy reasons I can't provide any of the account information. However, if you can send me a PM with what information you do have about the original owner, that might be enough for me to update the information into your name. If your friend had ever called in, it is possible it was changed to his name, and if that is the case I may be able to do the transfer manually. I can't promise anything at this point, but I'm willing to look into it for you.

I just wanted to update this post.
Today i got an e-mail back from Dell about the transfer of ownership on this Dell without knowing the first owners name.

I sent the info in on March 12th and just got the e-mail back today...

This is what they said.....

This is to advise you that the request has been completed.

The only info i was missing was the first owners name and e-mail.
I sent in all my info and where it asked for the owners name and e-mail i just said" dont know-see note".
In the note i explaned how i got the laptop as discribed above.

And today i got the above e-mail back.
SO it now looks like the laptop is in my name.
This is great because it still has 658 days left on the warrenty(next bussness day).
This will add some value to the laptop.

Larry
If your still around....Is there a way i can check online to see if it realy is in my name?I looked all over Dell.ca and when i put in the service tag it just gives me the warrenty info.

Thanks
Bill

Please let me know if you are still in need of the CD.
I picked up a couple of CD's a few months ago that are supposed to be for restoring Windows XP on ANY Dell PC.
I have used them on My Dell laptop and it worked just fine.....If you Like I could burn a copy and send it to you.
Let me know.
