I have a Thinkpad T21. 800MHz with 256MB RAM, no hard drive, $200 shipped to CONUS address.

It is not locked but if you prefer, I can password lock it before sending to you.

lol. I think he wants to get them cheap. If it were locked and the owner didn't know the PW then the owner wouldn't consider it worth much.

Sorry, mod said I cannot discuss what you can do with locked machines, but I think my offer matches his criteria. There is no asking for cheap from the OP and cheap is subjective.

That is one of the reasons this thread is teetering on the verge of evaporating into a puff of smoke.
If anyone mentions any unlocking services it will also disappear.

I completely agree, but the only thread i found containing the subject was part 12 of the FAQ: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=1689 (but maybe this part 12 ought to be in the ROTR also)

Well, there's this that I think covers it:

5. Do not post links or requests for warez.

And, of course, being accused of facilitating the sale of stolen goods would definitely violate this one:

11. DO NOT attempt to subvert, modify, or disrupt the normal flow or display of the Open Forum or its content.

But, failing anything absolutely specific prohibiting it, I think this covers just about any situation:

1. In all situations, whether explicitly outlined in the Rules or not, the Moderator's judgement prevails.

It's an unwritten rule. You know, the kind the board owner says is a rule ... so nobody questions it. To do so would be a mistake .

Not that I'm agreeing with it, and not to step on toes, but I didn't see anything that was offering a service, or advice. To me it looks like any other person looking to buy a laptop with a dead motherboard or something. One man's junk is another man's something or other.....

To agree with the moderators though, I've had things stolen in the past, and they were password protected, and I'm glad that things like how to bypass passwords aren't discussed because it makes me feel a little better, even though it was just a phone. At least there are still honest people out there.

The fact that we've already implied that it's possible already aids, even without instructions/service.

I hope that if I do mess up (which I probably will) the Admin will address me as politely as it has most of the poster's who have mistakenly transgressed.

If you want to buy or sell passworded laptops that is OK just don't discuss password cracking.

Hey, like I have replied. If anyone wants to buy a password locked Thinkpad, I will kindly put a password in mine, sell and ship it to you. I promise I will forget the password once it is shipped and NEVER report the laptop stolen. You want security, I give you security.

i think its pretty obvious..

similarly, as mentioned above, asking for password locked thinkpads would tend to make a market for stolen thinkpads or thinkpads with an uncertain history and with unknown passwords..

SO, if any offers are made to sell such, a valid proof of ownership will be a requirement for any transaction to take place, here..

Hardly. There are enough passworded machines available from companies. Nobody knows why the passwords were set and nobody knows what they are. Aside from the poor slobs who set passwords and forget them - such people, exist, whether you want to believe it or not.

Anyone who thinks a supervisor password protects them in any way against theft is very naive.

That might have been the case at one time, Bill, not not anymore.

There is no way to prevent someone from using a stolen Thinkpad. At best, you can prevent your data from being misappropriated (with a HDD password). Anyone who claims anything else is misinformed or lies intentionally.

Plenty of passworded machines on eBay for anyone who wants to buy. No need to look for them here. Not without a very good explanation anyway.

This brings the type of attention that no one needs.

You guys bringing up all these "stolen" issues is not helping my trying to sell an old machine.

You telling me that I have to show proof of ownership if I password locked a machine for sale? Or that I have to show proof of ownership if I forget the password after I ship? Remember I am still trust worthy from CA? This is only my 16th anniversary with Thinkpads.

wow i did not know this would be a hot topic. in fact i have been doing this for years, are little team was the first to come up with the ability to unlock them, i used to buy in bulk off lease thinkpads or in bulk for large corporations that had upgraded. as you all know no one took the time to totally test the machines, it was always a calculated risk as to how many had some kind of damage or were locked out. but we always negotiated a price taking those factors into play, like say 20% of them would be worthless except for parts. thats kinda how the whole unlock project started out, to make some of our unsellable laptops sellable again. T AM NOT LOOKING FOR STOLEN GOODS! i am a legit person with a legit business i do not need that trouble.

one of the above posters was correct in saying i am looking for them cheaper than what they sell for because if yours is locked you have 3 options, buy a new blank chip off ebay and realize unless you have a bin to write to it that mactches your machine EXACTLY you just got ripped off, 2 pull your chip and read it, or build an I2c programmer and read it via ISP then pay us or the guy in australia to give you your code, or 3 send laptop to us.

also some thinkpads as we all know just do turn on one day with CRC error or a mysterious power on password no one set.

so basically i usually get people who want to get something for thier thinkpad and do no want to trouble with any of the option above.

Well, by giving out those details you probably just shot yourself in the foot (and raised the asking price of the systems you want ).

lol, maybe so, either way, i guess its win/win people pay someone in our team to revive thier laptop or they sell them cheap.

people dont realize the password locks everything, all data, the hard drive the motherboard, in some cases even the lcd inverter believe it or not.

lol, there is also only 1 place to get the hard drives unlocked also
