PM sent, and thanks for the reply. Does anyone know if this screen will fit a t60P?

It will not fit a T60/P machine.

Are you sure? I read somewhere that a few of the early T60p models used the same screen as the T42p, which in turn used the same screen as the R50p.

mine is a 2007-9EU, if that helps

Well. let me restate this. The part numbers are different, and the signal cables route to a different systemboard locations. I am not sure about pin configurations, so minimally if you were to try it you'd need a new inverter and entire signal cable. Buy all of that stuff, try it, then let us know :).

Well, this answer is a bit short, and a few details may shed more light on this question: First off, the UXGA FlexView/IPS panel used in a R50p can be found in the LCD service parts - ThinkPad R50/p, R51 and is seen to be an IDTech w/FRU=92P6683 (which, by the way, is identical to the panel used in 15” T42p’s).

In the thread: LCDs on T60/T60p - types, availability and other discussions there is much useful information about this topic (UXGA panels on T60p’s), and in particular a young Danish gentleman, Troels is an expert, kindly sharing his knowledge with us more amateurs and novices in this difficuelt field:
The 2623-DDU was the last produced T60p with UXGA. The last batch is from April '07 and used rebuilt T43p flexviews from IDtech, i.e. with a T60 style LCD cable. The LCDs are from one of the last batches of IDtech made, after the plant was sold to Sony in 2005.

They have been using IDtechs for a while now though, since BOE-Hydis never were able to keep up to demand consistently...
Next, the UXGA FlexView/IPS panel used in a T43p can be found in the 15 inch LCD service parts - ThinkPad T43/p and is seen to be an IDTech w/FRU=92P6753.

… and then the story is continued…:
still in the thread LCDs on T60/T60p - types, availability and other discussions, in the post of Sun Feb 10, 2008 7:01 am, where Troels wrote:All those who ordered a 2623-DDU on the Lenovo outlet in April of '07 got an IDtech LCD (including me). Also, seems as if people has gotten IDtech LCDs earlier on, perhaps when BOE-Hydis could not keep up with demand.

NOS = New Old Stock, they're from late 2005/early 2006. Production stopped around that point also.

No, it's not listed there for some reason, the FRU is 42T0345
Question now: Is the 92P6683 (R50p/T42p UXGA panel) identical to the 92P6753 (T43p) panel identical to the (T60p) 42T0345 IDTech panel? Well, hard to say, but the R50p and the T42/T43 panels all cost exactly same, if bought as an original spare part at IBM! The first (R50p/T42p) part could perhaps be a pre-RoHS part while the second (T43p) part could be a RoHS compliant part, which the third (the T60p) has to be. For some (unknown to me) reasons IBM are having a confusing large number of FRU’s all working identically; e.g. an UXGA panel for T43p’s may also be the 42T0356 which is neither listed in the above site, nor in the HMM. And, yes, the 42T0356 cost exactly the same as the 92P6683 and 92P6753 – indicating that these three panels are ”probably” identical. The IDTech T60p panel 42T0345 is not directly available as a spare part from IBM.

Then,
in the thread LCDs on T60/T60p - types, availability and other discussions, in his post on Sun Feb 10, 2008 7:39 am, kamaleon wrote: Do you know anything more about the IDtech one? Does it have anything to do with the older T4X IDTech ones (I mean is it the same panel with a different part number, adapted to the T60s)?
… which was replied to also
in the thread LCDs on T60/T60p - types, availability and other discussions, in his post on Sun Feb 10, 2008 11:38 am, where Troels wrote: Uhm well, the panel itself is the same, but since that the screens are determined by the EEPROM (EDID) on T6x series, the EEPROM on the IDtechs in T60ps were reprogrammed. The EDID contains information about the display resolution and certain timings. The T4x determined the resolution simply by different cables where some wires were cut to differ between UXGA and SXGA+.

and then it was finally added:
in the thread LCDs on T60/T60p - types, availability and other discussions, in his post on Thu Feb 14, 2008 5:09 pm, where Troels wrote: Yes, on T6x/R6x the screen specs are contained and read from the EDID (128 byte long) stored on a 24C02 256 byte EEPROM on the screen. The EEPROM is programmable without any mods because WP / Write Protect is pulled low.

<snip>

The T4x series relies on the cable to determine if XGA, SXGA+, UXGA or QXGA resolutions should be outputted. It's a case of cutting through some wires here and there - it's possible to create an SXGA+ cable from a UXGA cable by drilling a 1 mm hole for example.
Conclusion? It could seem that a native R50p/T42p/T43p IDTech UXGA panel could be modified for use in a T60p, but it may take a bit of effort… (getting the EDID device, and programming it) so it is of course easier (but a also more expensive!) just to get a newer, original T60p UXGA panel, made by BOE-Hydis – see 15 inch LCD service parts - ThinkPad T60, T60p.

Bottom line: Based on the above posts, the answer to the OP’s question (if this R50p panel can be used in a T60/p) more likely seems to be a "yes, if..." than a simple ”no”.

Best regards,

Johan

It will work in a T60/p if you reprogram the EDID in the EEPROM to contain the expected manufacturer code. Get the EDID dump from one with a UXGA T60p. See my posts on the last few pages of the LCD sticky in the T6x forums.
If it is not reprogrammed it will just display red-white-blue vertical stripes in a scaled 640x480 resolution.

If someone decides to do reflash the eeprom, my recommendation would be that it must be at the buyers risk.

LOL, thanks Johan

Johan, nice reply with some thought. The larger question is whether or not it's actually been done, and the answer could very well be no as it could be yes. Given the complexity of what would be required, my hunch is that its never been done.
:Nice:

I have done it with an UXGA and a defective QXGA which came from a water damaged T42p, and a new but pressure marked QXGA respectively. The first one worked perfectly when dumping the edid from the original uxga t60p panel and reflashing the T42p uxga with it.
I couldn't get the qxga to work properly - the edid posted on 51nb which should work for qxga does only produce a black screen. Flashing an UXGA edid onto it made it work in uxga mode (so that the rest of the screen was just black), but that seems a bit pointless :(

jamba has a UXGA LCD in his T60/P and the item for sale is a R50/P UXGA LCD. So he'd be attempting to do what troels you did successfully - "The first one worked perfectly when dumping the edid from the original uxga t60p panel and reflashing the T42p uxga".
So, he'd need a way to pull the EDID in the EEPROM from the T60/P's UXGA LCD and then reprogram the EDID in the EEPROM in the R50/P's old UXGA LCD. What device does this and how much does it cost?

Can this process be used to FLASH a 14" UXGA LCD to install in a T6x?

In the event that it will gain even more interest, so that the flexview screen offered at this nice price by Positive will sell faster, i decided to post here...

HarryC,
There are prebuilt solutions for this, but i have only found old/outdated solutions which requires DOS.
You'd need a parallel to i2c bus adaptor, nearly as seen in http://www.lancos.com/e2p/easyI2Cbus.gif
Then you'll need the JAE 30 pin connector which goes to the LCD connector on the back of the LCD. They are pretty hard to find, and usually cost much if you're just buying a single, so i'd recommend just using a broken/old either SXGA+ or UXGA cable from a T4x/R5x series, and solder the SDA, SCL, Vcc and GND onto the connector where it should be.
You'd need a 3.3V power supply (not +5V) so a LDO voltage regulator (like LE33) and an old power supply from say an old discman or similar which may have broken down years ago (i.e. about 6V output unloaded).
You'd need PonyProg2000 which is a programmer used to program many memory types.
http://www.lancos.com/ppwin95.html - latest beta works fine for the purpose.
Approximate cost: $5-10, if you can find can buy all components locally (e.g. radio shack) and already have the JAE connector or an old cable, and if you have an about 4.5-12V DC voltage source. :)

Crashnburn,
Post it in the LCD discussions thread in the T6x forums, but if it's otherwise pin compatible, yes.
