LF: 12-14" cheap laptop

#1 Post by qviri » Tue Apr 08, 2008 6:52 pm

Hi guys,

sorry for lack of specifics. I've been asked by a family member to suggest a laptop to think about/purchase. I cannot guarantee that they will end up buying something in the end, but chances are pretty high.

Required usage is running (a recent version of) Linux and some light Java 5 programming, probably occasional text editing and internet usage. Laptop is to be used at school and brought home daily so heavy machines are discouraged. I am thinking that best sizes for the screen are around 12"-13"-14". Resolution XGA or SXGA+ for the 14".

Budget is "preferably below $400". This will of course depend on the machine offered, but $500 isn't going to go through even if it's a Core 2 Duo. $200-$300 is probably ideal.

Thinking of specific models, I've been thinking of T2x, X3x, low-spec T4x, or equivalent. USB 2.0 will be definitely considered a bonus. A Pentium 3 around 1.0 GHz and up will probably be sufficient. Would prefer 512 MB of RAM but don't know how much we'll be able to swing. Internal wireless is a bonus but not a large one. Hard drive size is not a major concern, 20 GB would be fine. It would help if it was 5400 rpm or generally a more recent model. Windows COA not required.

For condition, mint is not a requirement. A used machine is okay as long as it's not falling apart. Worn labels on keyboard, somewhat scratched top covers, cracks that don't affect structural strength are acceptable. Missing keys would be an issue, as would excessively weak LCD hinges. LCD doesn't have to be perfect, some dead pixels are acceptable, but excessive blemishes or backlight problems are generally out of consideration. It would help if battery wasn't entirely dead but the laptop will be generally used near an outlet so fresh battery is not a requirement.

I won't insist on a Thinkpad, but I obviously have a bias. Comparable business models from other manufacturers will be seriously considered.

Any recommendations for specific models? Is a low-spec T4x going to happen for $300? Anything out here on the forums? I'd rather not go to ebay for this one as I'm rather busy in the near future.

Thanks!
X220/IPS, T60p/IPS

I have a R52 that might be a good candidate for you. The only real issue with it is that it doesn't have a COA, but that should be a non-issue for you since you'll be using Linux anyway.

I'll have to double check the speed, but off the top of my head, it's a P M (around 1.3-1.4), 512Mb RAM, 40Gb HDD, 14" XGA screen, Intel A/B/G WiFi. The screen is in good shape, but the case lid has some residue from an asset tag.

I'm thinking in the low $300s plus shipping. Let me know if you are interested.

Here's one (X31) possibly for sale that should fall into your requirements:
