Many users are happy with Crucial memory even though it is not used by IBM - see user feedback at the link posted. Crucial 1 GB PC2700 laptop RAM sticks frequently sell for $45 incl. S/H (last time as discussed in the thread Crucial 1 GB DDR 333 (PC 2700) RAM: Only $45 from Newegg!). For IBM-brand Elpida RAM, check e.g. this auction.

IBM/Lenovo uses many, many different brands of RAM when you buy RAM from them, even sometimes going so far as to ship many different brands of RAM modules under the same FRU#.

It actually seems like every one does this these days, which make me wonder just how "crucial" (ha ha) having a truly matched pair is when it comes to dual-channel. I mean, if IBM sells different brands under the same model number, surely it is reasonable to assume that they expect some people will try to pair it with another stick bearing the same FRU, regardless of who actually manufactured either stick?

Here's a weird one for you: I purchased a T60p which came with a single 1GB stick of Samsung PC2-5300 RAM. I wanted to go to 2GB, so last December I ordered a Crucial 2 x 1GB DDR2 upgrade kit for $50 shipped. Since the price was right, I decided that I was going to take the original stick out and use a matched pair from Crucial. Lo and behold, the box comes, it has Crucial markings inside and out, but instead of shipping me Micron memory, Crucial put their stickers on SAMSUNG memory! And when I compared them to my original stick of RAM, the new sticks both turned out to be the EXACT SAME Samsung part number as the one I already had!!! The only difference between my original stick and the new "Crucial" ones is the Crucial sticker on the back instead of a Lenovo sticker with an IBM/Lenovo FRU. Unbelievable.

So even the memory manufacturers themselves are playing this game! :) It made me wonder what I would have received if I had just bought a single stick of Crucial instead, but it's a crap-shoot so with my luck I probably would have received one that didn't match my existing RAM. ;)

This is really funny. i bought my first t40 from ebay which had 256mb pc2100 ram. when Needed to upgrade I couldnot find any in my nearest pcworld shop so I bought pc2700 by crucial. And it worked fine. Than after few months I saw they are selling pc3200 very cheap, so I bought one 1gb pc3200. though its written that it will support it, i bought it finger crossed. And it worked and it was faster than my old pc 2700ram. After that i was looking for another stick but it seems that no one stock pc3200 for laptop any more.
