I'm talking about restoring the original finish - the rubberized Thinkpad black. One of the things I love about Thinkpads is their business-like appearance. When I want outrageous looks, I've got 2 purple Sony laptops ;-) For wilder looks, I know people that have polished the magnesium cases of their VAIOs to a chrome-like finish!

Nothing does top the business look of the ThinkPads. Other laptops look nice now, but remember 5 or 20 years ago, how cool you thought the modern looking laptops looked then, and how cheap people say they look now? But the conservative black case design just doesn't seem to age. But I do prefer the smooth black paint featured on laptops such as my 380, I really like the slightly mettalic paintjob on the 570 but the rubber job damages too easily.

I had a 380Z once where somebody had carefully covered the whole thing with black enamel. It had been sprayed very carefully and looked like a custom car finish. I received it like that from an ebay auction.

That sounds nice looking. I'd like something like that myself for my laptop but I know it wouldn't look good for very long since my laptop does a ton of travelling and is put through tons of use each day almost. I'm actually surprised IBM's paintjob still looks good on it. I once had a 760ED that was put through as much use and of the same type and it's paintjob started to look like crap rather fast.
