#1 Post by jamiphar » Fri May 02, 2008 12:03 am

Like the title says, I'm looking for a hard drive cover for a 15" T42p. If anybody has a spare, please let me know!

The eBay shop Wibony may be a cheaper alternative (in particular if you need more than one item), see e.g. Genuine IBM T40 T41 T42 T43 Hard Drive Cover Caddy or Genuine IBM Thinkpad T40 T41 T42 T43 Hard Drive Cover. I have bought from and was impressed with the fast shipment from China to Denmark - and received genuine IBM parts, as advertised.

Johan: Those are for 14" models. Those are much cheaper and easier to find.

What? I always thought the cover was identical for 14.1" and 15" T42's?? I know that the caddy is slightly different (in length, I believe?), though... but also the cover? Sorry in such case

If you write them a note, wibony will send you a 15" cover. But make sure that you email them through eBay system first.

Worked for me a few months ago.

FYI, the eBay link above is for Genuine IBM parts and that is important. Many sellers actually supply knock-offs and they are inferior. They look perfect and fit properly, but they are made of a thinner, inferior plastic, with less metal interior bracing and no rubber bushings. Without the rubber bushings, the drive can slightly back itself out and cause boot up problems. That, is fact.

Right from IBM parts, a 13R2922 which is the 15" HDD cover is $11.04 plus some exorbitant amount for shipping I imagine.
Maybe other members will want one and a multipile item purchase would work to save on shipping.
(the 14" cover is $19.44 - go figure...)

Johan: The caddy is the same. It is the cover that is different. The side pieces that hook onto the caddy screws are longer.

Thanks, everybody, for correcting my (obvious!) lack of knowledge; I now stand happily corrected/educated. A friend just explained the caddy versus cover issue like this:
A friend wrote:The caddy's are the same in all the T4x thinkpads, 14" or 15". The difference is the cover, on the 15" model the drive sits about 1" deeper inside the notebook, so all IBM did was make the metal tabs on the cover longer to reach the extra inch to the drive screws on the standard caddy.

I too was fooled by it because I bought one with no drive caddy or cover. If you look at a picture of one on ebay, you will instantly see the difference.
Ha! Now I also know this - so now I am not again going to "misinform" anybody about this! Thanks, folks; I very much appreciate the continuous ThinkPad-education I am taking on this forum! Please never let it end... I certainly need to learn much more!!

Best regards,

Johan
