Just a few comments:
(note: After submitting this reply, I first then realized that it is written with my purely "T42-glasses on"... so please bear with me for having entirely neglected T43/ps and T6x/p's from the below... apparently, I only have eye for T42's!
)
As to your request "160-200 MB 7200 *very* much desired", the largest 7200 rpm HDD for use in T42's is the 100 GB's Hitachi (7k100) or the likewise 100 GB Seagate Momentus 7200.1 (the thing is that T42's are using PATA drives, which are "only" available with up to 100 GB capacity, in 7200 rpm versions). If you want a larger HDD, consider the 250 GB 5400 rpm Western Digital WD2500BEVE - see the thread Hitachi website - 7K100, 100 GB PATA HD is unavailable - it is reported being almost as fast as 7200 rpm HDD's. Beware that 7200 rpm PATA HDD's have gone out of production, and cannot be found anywhere, no longer!
T42(p)'s will only support max. 2 GB RAM, this is a limitation in the chipset. Therefore, your wish "2 GB+" cannot be honored in a T42 - it is 2 GB, maximum, period.
I am not quite sure about what you mean by "discrete graphics", if you are talking a T42? All T42's had "discrete graphics...! T42's came with e.g. the 64 MB ATI Radeon 9600 GPU and the T42p's came with the ATI FireGL T2 128 MB GPU. The former will be cooler and less power-hungry (giving longer battery time!), but you can use the outstanding program "Notebook Hardware Control" to limit power consumption for both GPU's, and hence extend battery time, reduce the heat and reduce fan noise - see e.g. the thread NHC 2 is out!!. You may get an impression of the range of T42's available through looking in the ltwbook - officially entitled: "Personal Systems Reference, Lenovo ThinkPad Notebooks, 2005 to present - withdrawn (June 2008 - Version 341)".
As you will see in the ltwbook, WiFi of the "N"-standard is not, and has never been, available in T42/p's - you'll have to go for a T6x if requiring "N". Maybe there is some CardBus "N"-interface available that can be used in a T42(p); I don't know?
My recommendation: Stay away from Vista in a T42 (particularly if only having 64 MB discrete graphics!); it will drain your battery, it will be slow, and it won't bring any advantages compared to XP.
I just sent you a PM with a few hints about where to find what you are looking for - already today!
