WTB: motherboard for T4x

#1 Post by SaberX » Mon Jun 30, 2008 11:29 am

Well maybe looking to buy a motherboard depending on price.

New girlfirend has a nice T-41(working good).
But with all the talk of the GPU problems with the T4x laptops i like to pick up a motherboard as a backup(just incase something happends).

What do a nice T4x board sell for?
I'm guessing that a T40/p , T41/p , T42/p will fit and work?

I know that the T40's will run the ram at 266.And theres diffrent video options.

Anyone have a good working T41 board(good ATI chip & USB 2.0).
Maybe looking for two of thease boards..

I would probably hold off with buying one until yours goes bad since usually the later you buy the cheaper it will be.

If you are so afraid of the GPU issue, you can make a preventive move by gluing a proper heatsink on it with some some Arctic Silver. Not only does it cool the GPU, if it's tall enough to make contact with keyboard it will prevent the GPU from becoming loose. This might take a little time depending on the heatsink you get, when I did a couple of times I had to trim them with a dremel but it sure beats paying $100+ that these mobos go for as well as taking the machine completely apart and replacing it (done that too). :)

Ya i guess your right.
It's the girlfriends T41.She does handle it with care.Big thing i toll her is when the system is on and if she has to move it from room to room, just use two hands and grab it on both sides.Never grab it by one hand and by the corner. It will flex.If she treats the laptop nice i think it will be a nice while befor it has a video problem.
I looked at doing the heat sink mod to the video chip as you said. But it has the long cpu heat sink and fan in it.It already covers the video chip to cool it down abit.
