WTB: T60 2623-D6U 14.1" XGA LCD

#1 Post by Simba » Tue Jul 01, 2008 3:48 pm

Hi all,

I have the T60 2623-d6u and it runs at a native resolution of 1400x1050. Lately, the small text is hurting my eyes very much. I tried decreasing the resolution to 1024x768 but everything is blurry. I tried increasing the font size but didn't quite like the output. I would like to buy a matte XGA LCD for my t60. I can even trade in mine (matte SXGA+) for a matte XGA LCD.

Thanks.

Are you looking for a panel or the entire assembly? If you want to swap assemblies, you should note that your model has bluetooth, and that the model and antenna are inside. If you want to swap panels, you should note that swapping panels in that model is easier "the second time you do it". The panels are easy to damage when you remove the bezel. (fastened with 2-sided tape) Also, pay close attention to the way the hinges and antenna wires are hooked on.

Hi richk,
To be honest, I don't know the answer to your question. I have never opened my T60 (except palmrest to install RAM). After reading your response, I am having second thoughts about installing the new panel/assembly as I never did this before. I looked up eBay and there is one for sale (http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-IBM-THINKPAD-T6 ... otohosting) but it is just the panel. I searched Lenovo too but no luck. May be I am missing something. The laptop still has warranty (I think). Can I ship it to Lenovo and have them install the new LCD?

Or the best option would be to sell my beloved T60?! :(

If you use this laptop mainly on a desk, consider attaching an external monitor. Virtually all LCD monitors have much lower pixel densities than your 14.1" 1400x1050 screen, so things will appear much larger. My T43p and R50p have 15.0" 2048x1536 displays and I usually view documents with small text on an external monitor.

Thanks for your advice, pianowizard.

But I really don't like having an external monitor. I think it defeats the purpose. I just might sell this one (it's very painful) and get the x61 instead. I don't like T61 as its a wide screen and I hate wide screens.

Any advice on what my laptop is worth? It's 2623-D6U and upgraded to 3GB RAM.

Thanks.

If you don't mind the R series, the 14" XGA screened R60s do sometimes come up in the Lenovo outlet store. There was a couple of them on their yesterday, but they're gone now. Standard screen T60s occasionally make an appearance too.

Thanks for the tip, FredGarvin.

I checked the Lenovo Outlet and like you said there were no new T60's or R60's. However, there is 1 refurb T60 and a couple redistributed R60's. I can even settle for a refurb but not redistributed.

Sigh! I wish I had selected XGA when I bought this laptop 2 years ago.

Why not increase the dpi setting (rather than the font size)?

The dot pitch for a 15" XGA screen is 85 dpi and for a SXGA+ screen it is 116dpi. You might want to change the default Windows (if that is your OS) display resolution from 96 to 110.

FYI: 14.1" SXGA+ has ~ 124 dpi
14.1" XGA has ~ 91 dpi

12.1" XGA (on the X61) has ~ 106 dpi, right between the other two

Another thing you might consider is getting computer glasses. If you have glasses, your doctor can prescribe glasses that will help with work that is about 18" away, which is farther than reading glasses are set. I like mine.

And of course, I'd be remiss if I didn't suggest dumping Windows or at least giving Linux a try. Most Linux programs deal with changing font size much more nicely than Windows programs.

fasterbybike,

Yes, I increased the dpi to 106 but not all applications are using this. Some text is small and some is big. It is not uniform.

whizkid,

I think x61 might just be good enough for me as it has 106 dpi. And yes, I already have glasses and I think it's time to change them. But the smaller text has done enough damage already to my eyes.
I cannot use Linux as I mainly work in Visual Studio and SQL Server.

Better yet, I'll get a desktop instead! :)

Re: WTB: T60 2623-D6U 14.1" XGA LCD

Guys,

I am planning to get this item to replace the SXGA on my T60 2623-D6U with an XGA -

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-IBM-Lenovo-14-1 ... 7C294%3A50

I am only looking for the LCD but the listing includes other stuff as well. I looked up the part number at Lenovo and it matches with the one in the ebay listing (FRU 13N7051). I have read in the forums that SXGA and XGA use the same cable and inverter. Am I good to go?

Thanks!
